Hi

I have 'mastered' the technique for uploading photos (to photobucket as it happens) and inserting links into my postings here - all well & good.

What I would like to be able to do is upload files of other types such as Excel, PDF maybe even word docs to a free site and put links to those in my postings. Photobucket as it's name suggests is just for photos. Can anyone point me towards a similar capability. I don't have the knowledge to set up my own website and it would be so rarely used. I just want to up load a few MB once in a while.

TIA

Bob

I can't comment re UKW and what type of files can be uploaded but as far as storing them online goes...some ISPs provide this capability..maybe yours does.

If you have web space with you internet account (from your ISP) you can upload to there using an FTP program, such as SmartFTP or CuteFTP.

You can then link to the file in exactly the same way as if it were a picture on photobucket.

Cheers

FTP drag and drop is built into the latest internet explorer just log on to your isp free site then go to 'page' and click on upload to ftp site

Hi Old,

I have found my free webspace and bookmarked it in IE
Not sure where to find 'page' or indeed where 'upload to FTP' located.

I have IE6 SP2 installed
Also Netscape 7.2
and Firefox 2.0.0.8
I can see my home page in all three browsers

Sorry if these are dumb questions - any help appreciated

Bob

Any chance of expanding on this a bit? I've got IE7 but I can't find this option anywhere. It would be dead handy if it's a simple as you say.

Help -
windows help & support .'ask question'_file upload. -
file transfer protocol (ftp)
FAQ -
how do i upload files to FTP website .
and follow the instructions
edit for info :- i am useing Vista.

I think the options you refer to must be associated with Vista.

I don't see an 'ask a question' option under xp help

Thanks for trying

Bob

Thanks Tony,

I finally managed to upload some files although my ISP does not seem to use the url formats mentioned in the links you provided.

Appreciate yours and the help I got from others.

what i meant by ask question is what you type in the search window the question being 'file upload'

OK thanks OLD. sorry if I appeared thick yesterday. Managed to get an eval copy of Terrapin which is the application recommend by my ISP and that did the trick.

I presume that means you are expected to pay for the package eventually!!

There are plenty of very good Free for home use FTP programs around.

FileZilla mentioned above is my favorite.

Very easy to navigate around your own computer files and the server structure and files.

Thanks Chas,

Yes you are correct. I'll need to cough up 20 notes after 30 days If I want to keep using it.
I'll have a go at your suggestion before then.

Cheers

Bob

EDIT

Found the program, installed it and seems very good - certainly for the simple things I want it for. Terrapin now consigned to the re-cycle bin!!
Thanks again Chas

I'm really struggling with this. I have FTP switched on in my Internet Options (IE7) but trying to connect to ftp://upload.ntlworld.com just gives me errors. I usually use Smart FTP but I sometimes have trouble connecting - after that it is fine. But it sure would be convenient to do it straight from IE.

:(

Steve, I've been round this buoy a few times later and read that IE7 has the FTP option removed ( even though I could not work it in IE 6 either.

I've just loaded Filezilla and it is so easy to use, I don't think I'll be using IE again. I don't use it for browsing either.

My advice would be to get filezilla installed. It is free and I was up and running in minutes

It's certainly my kind of program, once setup with regular ftp sites used stored in the Quickconnect drop down menu it's a doddle.

One word of advice make a note somewhere of all your login details, it is easy to become complacent and like pre-programmed 'phone numbers forget the details when or if something goes astray, saves a lot of time sorting out the paperwork again.
