I'm intending to buy some Pony Pipe Clamps as part of my project to build a FWW New Fangled workbench . I'll be needing some 3/4" pipe that's about 6ft long for the end clamps, and the only way to do that with the Axminster offering would be to join 2 pieces of 1000mm pipe using the coupling provided which is not ideal. Don't even know if the clamps would slide over the joining pieces. Does anyone know of a source of pipe that I can buy in lengths of up to 6ft please? Presumably I would have to cut the threads on the end myself to attach the clamping mechanism?

A good plumbers supplier will provide you with a 12' length of pipe( can't remember the correct name) when cut in half there will already be a thread at each end which is all you need.

Dom, would it be Conduit by any chance!

I think the answer is no. There was another thread about pipe clamps and I am sure you need black iron pipe, its got a much thicker wall than conduit which I think will distort and collapse under clamping loads.

I thought it was black iron gas pipe that is used in industrial settings such as schools etc. The ends come ready threaded and it is made gas tight with horse hair wrapped around the threads IIRC. I would imagine various diameters are available for different plumbing applications.

Thanks guys. The Axminster site says that it will "Fit onto standard 3/4" bore black iron pipe with 3/4" BSP thread".

So this is stuff that you get from a plumbers merchants?

It's 3/4" barrel that you need easily available from decent plumbers merchants comes in 10ft/3.0m lengths both ends threaded and with one coupler. Outside diameter is approx 1 1/8" with 1/8" wall thickness, was a long thread a couple of weeks ago about using the pipe for racking. Don't be tempted to use anything else as the tollerances are quite tight if you don't want the clamp heads to slide.

As Jason B says you need black iron pipe as tolerance is critical.
Difficulty is finding a DECENT plumbers supplier.
The pipe from a good un is cheap a chips

I've got Ponys and some Axminster look alikes.
The Ax seem OK and are half the Pony price

I find Pipe clamps very adaptable - more so than Sash.

Alot of the plumbers merchants I phoned up were clueless,
Upon asking for 3/4" gas barrell, I was given prices for the yellow plastic pipe...
In the end I went to the Pipe Centre, they are part of the same chain as plumb centre, and building centre etc.
I paid about £4 per metre inclusive of VAT

Thanks MTP. I phoned Plumbcenter earlier who put me through to Pipecentre. They quoted £5.25 per metre + VAT for a 3.25m length of heavy weight (they don't have any medium weight in stock). 2 of those would be enough to make the pipes for the top of the bench, plus the 2 vertical pipes for the planing rail. Does anyone know whether the outside diameter of the heavyweight is the same as the medium?

I think the best plan would be to buy the clamps (calling in at Axminster tomorrow) and take them with me when I buy the pipe.

Thanks for all your help guys - much appreciated as always.

If you are going to need to thread the ends I would suggest you hire a ratchet die stock, I've got one but as you are only likely to need it for the one job its a lot cheaper than buying. You will also need a decent engineers vice to stop the pipe turning as you thread it or hire a pipe vice as well.

Before you go to Axminster check out Tilgear as theuy often have deals on the Pony clamps.

Can't find a site for Tilgear. Any clues? Pipe Centre says that their pipe is threaded at each end (one male, one female). Given that the verticals will not need threaded ends, the two male ends should be fine for the top clamps - assuming they carry the correct thread of course!

Thanks Dom. I'm definitely going for the Ponys. Review on epinions very positive, and as they will be the heart of my new bench I reckon it would be a false economy to go for anything less.

All the barrel that I have bought comes threaded both ends but one end has a straight coupler.

Tilgear don't have a website(only started taking cards a couple of years ago!) Tel 01707 873434 My 2006/7 catalogue has two pair of No 50's for £25 +VAT, not sure what axminsters are.
