One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a police officer comes in for a haircut and when he tries to pay his bill the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.' The police officer was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door. A similar reward is returned from a fire fighter and an ambulance crewman.

Then a Member of Parliament came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill the barber again replied, 'I can not accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The MP was very happy and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen MPs lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.....

lol - who was it (dennis skinner i think) wh note he had a problem with the required mode of address as the other MP in question was neither right, nor honourable, and most certainly not a gentleman

i tend to find this joke can apply to anyone dishonest by trade :---) , but find it works best with politicians, like a certain mr.cable. he really is in the dog house now.

Me too! I feel gay most days and happy to be alive. Surely gay isn't a proper noun needing a capital letter though, it's a happy outlook on life. Or does the capital refer to some kind of abnormality somewhere?

Except that some seem to find it necessary to make us all aware of their private business by announcing their 'status'. Why? I don't go round telling people I've never met that " I'm not gay you know" because...

a. I don't know them
b. They probably don't want to know
c. They don't care
d. errrr....... there's no d dammit.

When i was a kid it was illegal to be a homosexual then they made it legal soon they will make it compulsory.
Quite honestly I get sick of hearing about the *** lives of so called celebrities.
Why do they think we want to hear it.

I'd largely agree, but ideally b. should be 'there's no reason they need to know' which would only be valid if c. was always true; sadly, this isn't the case, some people (obviously not on this forum) think that there is something wrong with being gay and that 'hiding/not disclosing' it only proves the point. By being open about it it prevents others from using it against them.
Does their sexual preference matter? Certainly not to me, but if he's going to be open about it (attend functions with a male partner etc) then it's probably better to have it out in the open now rather than having some individuals smirking in the background later.
Relevant or not, surely we'd prefer to have our politicians open and honest, and let's not forget, we don't have (here) the circumstances leading to his announcement. It could, after all, have been something in an interview where the MP was asked about spending Christmas with his wife and family and rather than lie or ignore the question he simply answered it, factually stating that he would be spending it with his male partner.

For clarity, to avoid being accused of playing wordgames and because there's nothing to be ashamed of among a myriad other reasons.

I didn't say politicians are open and honest, I'm no fan of any of them, just that we'd prefer them to be that way. It seems ironic that this one is open and honest about at least one thing in his life (whether it is thought relevant or not) and still he's criticised.
