I'm about to start a project this weekend and have decided that there will be some requirement for pocket holes.

Currently I don't have a jig and have no experience with pocket holes.

Most of the pocket holes I'll need to do will be into big pieces of wood so I won't get the chance to use a bench jig however am I best to buy a bench jig and then remove the pocket hole guide or best just to buy this? I envisage that most of my joinery will be dominos where possible but there are times when they are not appropriate so I'm not sure how much use a bench jig will get but I get the impression I can't buy a bench job without a guide if I already have one?

Anyone got any views on brands? Cheap ok? Or does it have to be Kreg? What about UJK?

Thanks in advance.

Kreg will do you. There's a set for about £15 plus screws. You can use the UJK screws from Axminster.

Search for a kreg mini on eBay. Get the screws and driver bits from Axminster. I have the UJK, wouldn't buy it again. Use my kreg mini much more.

What is it you don't like about the ujk jig Dan ? I've had a kreg jig years then saw the ujk full set and bought it. I like the vac attachment and it's a very solid built jig but somehow I feel the kreg is better too

I find the screws don't seem to fit in the holes and go the way they should do quite as well as with the Kreg. These are UJK screws in both jigs I'm talking about, so they're not at fault, it's the jig angle, user error or the drill bit that's causing it.

It came up on the FOG a while back.

The Kreg mini is handier for doing in-situ repairs too. The UJK appeared to be Axminster's "take over the Work with their own brand" attack on pocket holes. I fell for it, wish I hadn't.

I've ordered the Kreg R3 Junior with a case of screws

I did look at the mini as well but I liked the fact that with the Junior I scan screw the jig in place. I can foresee a number of occasions coming up where I may not be able to clamp and that was appealing. I did order it from Yandles as their site said they had stock and would get it next day. I have since had to cancel that order as they phoned me to tell me that the Veritas sock I'd also added onto the list wasn't in stock "Not to worry as long as everything else is", "well err no actually the Kreg jig isn't due in until tomorrow so it won't get to you until Monday." I had ordered it because I need it for the weekend. I asked if they could deliver it on Saturday, they could but the delivery charge would have to go up significantly so I told them to cancel the whole order and that I'd go elsewhere.

I've now ordered from Bamford trading so hopefully that will be ok.

Thanks for the advice guys, i don't envisage doing a lot of pocket hole work but there are times when it will be useful.

^That's the one I have. Very handy size but the circular clamping gizmo has an annoying habit of falling off or getting stuck on the clamp head. Did you order a clamp to go with it? I have this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001DC9UR8) which works pretty well.

The Automaxx ones (from Kreg) are also good. Look the same but self-adust for thickness - might not go as wide are you are planning. Just an FYI.

Yeah that's exactly what I found too. Shame as it's a well made jig

Well I used the Kreg mini for a few holes on a project and found it to be good. I've got a few drawers to make in the next few weeks so I've just ordered the K5 as well! In for a penny and all that.
