Last Friday I had to cut back a tree that had been blocking the route. The bigger bits I set aside but couldn't resist playing with a couple of very small off cuts. I won't ask anyone to guess what wood it is, because there really isn't much clue given by the turnings. These are straight off the gouge, not even put wax on them as It was done just for me to see what the wood looked like and how it turns, both good. Turning quality excellent, grain acceptable.

I did say i won't ask anyone to try to guess the wood. but you are both wrong....
I suspect guessing from looking at it will be futile.. it is just so unlikely anyone would be correct.

Whatever it is (and I haven't a clue) it looks very nice anyway.

So, seeing as there is little to no chance of us guessing, care to tell us what it is WF? :)

Yes I will tell you.

It is Fig :)

and the vase thingy is beginning to crack already :) mind you it is spindle turned with nothing on it at all. Usually I put wax on my green turnings to help slow down the drying. It handles very similar to Hawthorn.

Well that's a first for me, never seen Fig Timber before, very nice. Cheers WF!

Turned up at my mothers at Christmas only to find that she had had her fig chopped down an had let the neighbour take the trunk for firewood!
Wasn't the biggest of trees but the trunk was a good 6".
