You could invest in a Holtey 11SA Smoother with attack angles of 59 or 89 degrees or give in and use a belt sander like what I am doing on some redwood panels?

I was quoting from Karl's webpage - I think he uses "attack angle" for EP.

With bevel up the EP is 59 degrees - reversing the iron (BD) gives 89 degrees.

I can confirm without a shadow of a doubt that Mr C's advocation of the back bevel is totally with reason - it works perfectly. I've been having a tricky time in planing some interlocked grain beech, but after a small back bevel, i've been planing away for hours on end getting lovely full width and length shavings.
