Heeelp!

The No4 will give you the studding you need for the No5,

I wish it were that easy Pete. I just discovered that the thread for the tote has been stripped at the upper end and will require re tapping.
The stud from the four has a cheapo Alli nut, so I dug through my odds and ends for a more traditional brass nut.
Different thread!
Back to the odds and ends for a matching stud, drag out the taps.
Now I have 1/4 BSW, 1/4 BSF, 1/4 UNF, 1/4 UNC, 6 MILL and 0BA... AND IT AIN'T ANY OF 'EM!
Any one know what it is supposed to be?

Roy.

Roy - I was sharpening the blade off a very old smoother I got from a recent auction, was taking an absolute age as it was hard as nails. Got to a point where I didn't seem to be making any more progress and I had a slightly wavy line going across the middle of the blade, I thought this was where my coarse stone was grinding. Then I realised that the blade must be a laminate, now I understand why it's so hard

Think the blade was a Marples Hibernian, big bugger

Bedrock frog on a Record??????
Just out of interest, what sort of frog did the Calvert-Stevens CS88 come out with? Standard Record (Bailey type) or something better?

Cheers, Vann.

Hi, Digit

Its 12-20 or 7/16 whitworth known as the english plane thread. I have a tap and die do you need a lenght of studing making?

Are you sure about 7/16 Whitworth? The tables I have show that at O/D .4375", 14 TPI, with 7/16 BSF at 18 TPI.

That's a long way from #12-20, which 0.216" O/D, which I believe to be usual in both Record and Stanley planes (from most periods).

I have one of the said beasties and the frog is a standard Record affair (not Bedrock) but no 'depressions' in the frog surface...it's a heavy casting though  - Rob

Hi, BB

Its under a 1/4, I ment to put 7/32 I think

Pete

Yes a much heavier casting Bob.
7/32 BSW Pete, why an earth did they have to use such a damned odd size I wonder.
I'll have a chat with a mate and see if he's got a suitable tap, I've plenty of studding thanks Pete.

Roy.

Known in the business as British Standard Lawnmower threads!

Closer examination Pete showed that someone had removed the top part of the thread, whether by drilling or stripping I don't know, but I managed to pick up the start of the remaining thread and screw in a length of stud. Time will tell if that will hold or whether I'm looking at silver soldering etc.
Meantime I've made up a new tote and stripped the green goo from the front knob.
