Hi all and cool site. Some advice plz on a planer thicknesser,i,m after planing down timber to 80mmx15mm from 90mmx25mm,,,and quite alot of it.Could anyone recomend which would be a good machine.I was looking @ dewalt dw733 but i havnt a clue, thx in advance.

You just want a thicknesser then? As a Planer Thicknesser is a dual machine and the dewalt dw733 is just a thicknesser.

The dewalt dw733 is meant to be the best, loads of people say so.

Do you have a dust extractor as Axminster Power Tools were doing some good deals on Thicknessers and extractors recently.

Here

No affliation, just Axminster a forum fav.

The main thing with a thicknesser for me is the noise. The cheap ones are soooo loud. I'd find the quietest one.

Sorry but surely you also need a planer or a p/t if you are to have any hope of squaring up your timber. Or am I missing something?

Are you talking about the Trend hoover such as this?

If you are (because I don't think Trend sell chip extractors) then you are going to have a problem keeping it unblocked, and will be forever emptying it.

As I have said I may be missing something (Chems is very knowledgable so there is a good chance I am), but if not you will want to take another look at what you need.

That was nice Mike, thanks.

I agree with Mike, that little vac won't cope with chippings from a thicknesser. You need a chip extractor with a 100mm inlet.

I have often on squared stuff just used the thicknesser, but then relied on a drum sander to get it all flat once glued up. So again Mike is right, you need a planer as well to complete the full process.

I can recommend the Axminster MB something for £170.

Your welcome Chems. You even make a mean cardboard box to send your commissions off to the client. :D https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/chun ... 42408.html

As I have always had a p/t or planer and thicknesser I have never tried squaring a piece of timber just using a thicknesser, but when you think about it those members who only use hand tools do it using just a plane all the time.
On the other hand as ashway has a lot of timber to work, and he will need one in the future he would be better off getting them both (or a p/t) now.

By the way I love the chunky tv table.

I agree about the noise but, sadly, there is no such thing as a "quiet" thicknesser at this end of the market, unless you get lucky and buy an old Multico or similar off eBay for a low price... Another option, if you had the space, would be to get a planer-thicknesser with an induction motor. You could remove the feed tables and just used it as a thicknesser, in order to save space.

Vacuums are also terribly noisy things, while also note being able to cope with large volumes of large particle waste (chips and shavings, as opposed to fine dust).

ok firstly thx for the replies guys, secondly omfg what can i have opened?ur saying my trend extractor wont handle it?,if money was no object what would be the ideal set up .

A bit more then you originally expected to pay but IMHO with the cast iron fence and three knife cutter block (instead of the normal ally and 2 knife in this price range) you have a nice machine.

If room is at a premium all you have to do is get a mobile base which will allow you to store it in the corner when not in use.

Of course you could aways buy second hand off Ebay and get better machines

I dont rate those ADE1200 for chip extraction - we used to have one at work and the elbow (inside where the hose joins on) is too tight a 90 deg turn and gets bunged up very easily - they are fine for coarse dust from tablesaws, bandsaws etc but not ideal for a PT or thicknesser (we've replaced ours with a DX5000 which is a lot better - all be it more expensive if bought new , we paid 90 quid on ebay)

Pete, did you try cutting out the cross/grill from inside the ADE1200's inlet? That's what the rest of us have done. It's there (as it also is on many other HVLP extractors) to prevent large objects (lumps of wood, stone, etc.) from being sucked up and damaging the fan. The downside is that they also seem to 'collect' stringy shavings, as you discovered. :p

we didnt but that didnt seem to be the problem - stuff was getting bunged in the elbow before it got anywhere near the cross.

It's now with alex (slim shady) amyway - and in the new shop (2 more weeks, whoop whoop) we will be running a fully ducted system off the DX5000, with a RSDE for back up

I'm about to take in a sedgwick planer/thicknesser with a tersa block over the next week.
It needs new motor and cutter block bearings as well as a good service that will be done by me before i sell it.
Not sure on the price yet but likley to be under £800 no vat.
