Hi, I'm Peter and I'm new to this site and indeed the world of chatrooms.

I am interested in buying a planer/thicknesser. My budget is approx £320. I have read some of the UKWorkshop articles on the DeWalt, Makita and Delta etc.

Regards
Peter

Thanks Chaps,

I was amazed at all the help and suggestions. Good or bad I will be picking up my new 'as seen' Delta TP400LSCE today for £200.
I certainly realise the need to work harder with relatively cheap tools. But as a retired gent, budget needs to be directly proportional to size of wallet.
My saw bench is unrecognisable from when I bought it, with many jigs and an integral router. Setting up can be slow but the results are good.
One thing missing from the thicknesser will be the Instruction Manual, I eventually have found this on
http://www.dewaltservicenet.com/service ... eSupport=1

Thanks again for all your help

Hi Peter

Welcome.

What type of woodwoking do you do? How wide is the widest board you will need to plane. At your budget you may be better looking for a used PT. There are always a few on eBay.

I am tempted by the Fox 22-564-250 Planer/Thicknesser at £321. The Erbauer ERB 052 BTE seems too cheap to be true.

Locally, I can buy a new Delta 22565 for £290, but can find no information on this model. Is it obsolete? Is it worth buying?

Peter

Perhaps this site might help?

Everything a growing boy needs to know about these beasts. Personally, I prefer to have two units - a planer and a thicknesser rather than a combined unit. It's a better way to go IF you have the space. If not, look for the combi unit that is the simplest to switch over from one function to the other.

Welcome to the forum, Peter. :)

Like several other members of this forum, I'm very happy with my AW106PT from Axminster although, the price appears to have rocketed in recent months. :? Fox (at Rutlands.co.uk) and Charnwood do identical machines. Maybe others as well.

Welcome to the forum Peter

Only advise I have is not to buy the Delta as they are no longer supported for spares and survice in Europe since being taken over by Black & Decker,

Cheers Nigel

It's horrible having to say this to every newbie that comes along, but I'm afraid you have to spend a lot more than what you are proposing to get a good machine. If you want to spend time woodworking instead of fettling and fiddling with machinery and then hand planing a board anyway, I'd suggest you go for the above suggested Axminster model - At Least.

The axminster is on sale this week at 10% off plus free delivery (normally 49 pounds).

Too tempting for me to resist...

For your budget it's eBay i'm afraid.

A quick search for planer gives me a Scheppach HMS 260 at £156 with 7 hours to go in Cirencester. The Kity as above has now reached £88 with a day to go and there is another kit 636 starting at £300 also with a day to go.

Location is important as they are nearly alway collection only but for your £300 budget you will get a good machine if you are careful.

I do agree re the extractor.

Good luck

Mick

if you decide to go with seperates i highly recommend the dewalt DW733 thicknesser - we bought one for work at the end of last financial and its been an absolute joy to use - easy to set up, portable, robust enough for sliding about in the back of our truck and accurate - I got it from axminster for about 350 notes plus vat (which we dont pay being a quango) http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-DeWa ... 577405.htm

planer wise we have an old multico which weighs an absolute ton but does the job - G&M tools have got one like ours currently for £75 - though it does need a bit of fettling. http://www.gandmtools.co.uk/cat_leaf.php?id=5854

so these two together wouldnt go massively over your budget and might be a better buy than one mid range PT

that said we arent fine furniture makers (benches , signs, and gates are more our bag) while outside work i'm a turner who dabbles in flat things when needs must so take my advice with a shovel full of salt as i'm prepared to be corrected by the more knowledgable members
