Planer / thicknesser Purchase advice sought

I'm looking to purchase my first planer / thicknesser machine.

The Axminster AW106PT looks about the right sort of spec and price...

Does anyone have first hand experience of this machine? How good is it?

Looking at comments on this forum the Scheppach hms2600ci sounds like a particularly good machine. Again anyone with first hand experience, please advise me? Is this the best 'affordable' 10 inch machine out there?

Any general advice on what to look for in such a machine, would also be most welcome

looks like no one's got first hand experience of these Andrew........ the aw106pt has had good write ups.As for the sheppach its £800, therefore it should be amongst the best :wink: .I've just bought a 10"p/t 2hp i believe the 106 is 1.5hp.

I have the Scheppach machine you mention and I'm very happy with it.

The only gripe I have concerns the very poor base/stand on which it sits. It has never really fitted properly and assembly was very problematic.

The planner sits on four bolts and alignment with the holes in the machine was impossible. The machine is extremely heavy and trying to line it up was a backbreaking excercise. It drove me :x I have it just about acceptable now, it is solid and stable at least.

When I have time I plan to make my own base and raise the height of the machine I may add some wheels as well.

The machine performs very well in action, excellent smooth finish and not much problem with snipe (I think thats the technical term) a good fence as well.

It is worth £800 and after a lot of research it was the best small workshop model available.

Hello Andrew,

I have the Sheppach HMS 260, had it about 6 years, found it an excellent machine.
I had problems with setting the outfeed table after it had moved,but solved that problem with help from this forum.

This is the only P/T that I have tried so cannot comment on any others.

Have a look at the Jet Planer/Thicknesser, it is an excellent piece of kit.

It's not on offer any more, they are having to recover their Bessey losses :wink: .

I am also a happy JPT-310 user, but Axminster are now selling its little brother, the ten inch JPT-260. This isn't on their website yet, but is in the new catalogue for £799 inc vat.
