Planer thicknesser Newbie advice req'd

Oh, one thing I have noticed is a bit of silicon spray over the beds works wonders when thicknessing.

Careful now! If you are finishing with an ooil finish or a lacquer silicone spray can give you grief (in the form of fisheyes) so personally I'd bever let it near a woodworking machine. Better to use Liberon Lubo Wax or PTFE spray on the beds I feel - but yes I agree with the idea of using a lubricant/rust repeller
