I'm shortly to purchase a planer thicknesser.

Having read quite a bit about the different models, i'm going round in circles and need a little guidance.

The Jet 260 would appear to be the best at under £1k (top end budget), having easy switchover to thicknessing.

The Axminster/Fox clones (£6/700) are more in my price bracket, but the thicknessing switchover appears to be a real ***. Or is it?

Any other options I should consider? I've thought about buying an older Scheppach 260 as these (apparently) have easier changeover to thicknessing. But then again you won't get any warranty. They seem to go about £4/500 on e-bay, but come up fairly infrequently.

Anybody like to share their thoughts?

Cheers

I don't have experience of those machines, but I'm wondering if (as i think somebody may have said on another thread) you might not do better by buying a used machine of higher quality...

Take note of the problems Mark and Olly are having with their Axi machines...

Wizer,

don't tell me you have a planer thicknesser which isn't for sale as well? :)

Karl ,i have a Lurum/matabo which requires no change over,
i've a friend who has a Kity which is the same.
After having a fox clone its a pleasure. :D

If you can afford to go for either of the Jet machines then, well, it's a no brainer, really! With that purchase, you'll also get the full support of Axminster/Brimarc and Jetman for at least one year - I can't remember if Jet products come with a two-year warranty or not?

Is this for personal 'hobby' use or are you looking to set up a business? If it's the latter then, that's even more of a reason to go for the Jet!! :)

Hi Olly

I always have used my workshop for business, but yes, it is a bit of a step up. I've got two decent jobs (fitted bedroom and a kitchen) lined up for early next year, and decided on two upgrades (having factored in an element of the upgrade cost into my price for the jobs  ) - a decent planer thicknesser and a Domino.

Anyway, whilst you were typing away a deal has been struck on the Jet :D

Cheers

Hi Karl,

glad you're sorted.

I was very tempted by the deal myself but the Scheppach will do me for a few years.

hi

sort of answered your own question

The Axminster/Fox clones (£6/700) are more in my price bracket

I have the AX 106p/t, I had problems with mine when i first had it mainly from the previous owner stripping it and then not knowing how to solve it's problems . Since I 've had it, it has been stripped again and restored it's now working fine , wish i had bought it new with a full warranty , so i could have relied more on axminster to help when i first started stripping mine.

I had to ask question eventually when i needed replacement parts, they fell over there selves to help, its seems other are having problems here on the forum , but all seem to be getting them sorted . The 106 is a very quite machine since i had it it not had a great deal of work but everything i have thrown at it it has coped well , hope this may be of some help . hc good luck with your choice.

You have to be in our secret society Jed. Send me a Festool Domino and I'll let you in....

its no secret and it isnt mine - but if i had the money and the space i'd go for something like this sedgewick - okay so its three phase so you'd need an inveter as well but it would probably last years and years longer than most modern kit.
