I've been looking at this planer
Here

I can't believe the price! it's so much cheaper than a Jet 60 A, and the spec is much the same (or have I missed something?) but at that price I could still buy This Thicknesser and have money left over. Is it too good to be true or should I go for it? :?

hi nibbo,
this is the planer i have been talking about. obviously made for the american market. but it looks tip top. ci fence, three knife block, cast hand wheels. and this design (the inclined plane adjuster) is a very simple classic. i to am sorely tempted by this beast. wish i could help you with an opinion instead of just drooling. bet no one on here has one has seen one either although somebody did buy a dust extractor from lyndhurst and parts were wrong/ rusty and the motor was incorectly rated. i may phone them and see how confident they are of their products.

Hi johnnyb

Under EU rules, the guard is illegal in this country.

In view of the experience related to the motor I'd be worried about this as well.

IIRC, Jet do a similar planer for the US market and it's about 600 USD. It is also a totally different beast to the 60A.

Cheers
Neil

Do you mean the motor was over/under rated for horse power? or it was the wrong voltage or maybe if it was originally for the American market the wrong Htz and voltage??? I'm still very tempted :?

Even if it was wrong, at that price, you could have it taken off, rewound, and reinstall it.

It was in this thread.
At that time I was interested in their 12" American contractor saw and could not get them to answer my e mails on it so I purchased a saw from Woodford instead

I posted a link on the Woodnet forum to see if any Americans could recognise the 200mm planer. One reply was

Hmmm...it does have a very generic look. Is it an 8 inch or 6 inch.....or should I say 200mm or 150mm?

Offhand I'd guess Grizzly 0586 or the previous 1018 model,
sunhill SM204, Jet JJ-8CS....

but it looks like they put smaller handwheels on it and skipped the mag switch.

the pics of the American Jet JJ-8CS are very similar to this Lyndhurst badged machine. the main castings look identical, I wonder if it is the same machine, if it is I gota go for it.
:D

Well did his Nibs go for the American surfacer, or were there too many 'if's an'buts' that went along with the deal. Still trying to make up my mind about getting a 60A and the thicknesser. too much choice. And then again there's that fantastic deal on the Jet planer thicknesser At£999.

Ahhhh :?:

Yes I did, it's in this thread https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/view ... hp?t=12902

Whoops! #-o , should have looked a bit closer,

Ta for the link. Very good review as well. Sounds like you've got yourself a star buy there your Nibness, I was going to go for the jet , but the two look as if they've come out of the same factory, just slightly different specs.

One of the main things I've been looking at is the quality of the fence. I have an Electra becks at the moment, it's good but the fence drives me nuts. it shifts every time I tighten it. Even after a few strong words it persists in being a royal b*****d.

I presume you have played a bit more with your toy, anymore thoughts or experiences.

What are doing for your thicknessing ? I noticed a PT in the background, is that going , or is it going to be thicknesser and back up for those wide boards?
And without wishing to appear stupid , what is NVR? :-k

I went for the Axminster CT330 as reviewed by Charlie HERE
I am delighted with this on testing, tried it on several bits of beech and no snipe what so ever. I didn't buy the Lyndhurst directly from their web site, I got it £200 cheaper on Ebay in a buy it now. I've jusy looked on ebay and they do not have any 6" or 8" for sale at the moment, it might be worth sending an email to see if they intend to sell any more using ebay.

£200 pounds cheaper, sounds like a giveaway, nicely done... :eek:ccasion5:

thanks Dave, My old man was in the army for an age and most of his conversations were in an abbreviated form, I tend to confuse simple things with armoured personnel carriers and the like.

( I'm having a bit of a forum night tonight, :D )
Nibs, how good is the fence and the calibrations on the surfacer?

Although they look similar (lyndhurst & Neils Jet 54A) I do believe the Jet is better in that it does have an index for angle setting, the Lyndhurst just uses stops at 45deg forward or backwards and a flip down stop for 90deg. As to the quality of the fence you would have to spent two or three times what I paid to see any improvement, if any. I put a piccy on the American Woodnet forum it was identified as Delta's 37-315 but probably of Chiwanese origin.
