Hi All,
Just got this slightly odd rather tatty 4 1/2 and I can't seem to make up my mind about its age.
The lateral lever is missing but it has the low knob and the straight lever cap hole.
Its the frog setup that throws me, is it a marriage? or what.
Any help gratefully received.

The Rosewood baloon knob and handle, flat frog surface and lack of fore and aft adjuster screw, suggest early Stanley or similar to me, but not entirely certain.

David

I would agree with David that it is an early Stanley

Have a look here for some help :)

If I have it wrong, I am sure some one will put me right. 8-[ :)

David,
Thanks for the reply.
I was not aware that there were unmarked Stanley's, this only has 4 1/2 cast at the front. Obviously the adjuster would have helped with the dating but sadly it is missing.
IYO is this worth me spending time resurrecting? There is just something about it that has stopped me tossing it out :?
Best Regards,
martin

Martin,

I'm pretty sure it's a Type 8 Stanley like this one (also with just #4 1/2 cast into the body, but Stanley on the still-present lateral adjuster). I don't have a shot of the frog handy to be 100% sure, but I can have a look tomorrow..

Very nice age of plane and well worth cleaning up, IMO. Mine came with a plastic rear tote jammed on hence the unmatched rear tote, but be aware that off-the-shelf replacements don't have the same angle for the studding, so if you don't do a graft repair onto the existing one you'll have to make a replacement from scratch yourself.

Cheers, Alf

Alf,
Many thanks, I think that I will have a go at restoring the the old thing, its smothered in some 'orrible user made imitation japanning gunk but under it all I'm sure there's a nice plane. I need to find out the precise type of adjuster for it and then see if I can unearth one somewhere- I'm usually OK at finding stuff

I have a few bits of lovely Indian rosewood offcuts to try a graft on the tote.

I'll post when its done. Bit busy with the behemoth table saw at the moment

Cheers,
martin

Pshaw! Someone's getting their priorities all wrong [-(

I can snap a pic of the adjuster if desired, but the descriptions in the type studies are pretty good.

Cheers, Alf

Just to add my thoughts. The plane looks like a very early Stanley unfortunately the only two identifying parts are missing ie the lateral adjuster and the blade ,I have a very similar #4 and I paid over £28 for it 2 years ago and it is one of the prides of my collection. Restore yours and get some bragging rights.

Whoops, that's a bit embarassing. Turns out mine's a type 7 #-o

Cheers, Alf

Who evidentally isn't much of a plane type study person as a rule... 8-[

Alf,
Now where the b****y **** am I going to find one of them?
Haven't got two have you?
Found an old frog this morning but wrong lateral, looks like two'wings' and no name.
At least I can get it up together and wait until one comes along.
Cheers,
Martin

Martin - suggest you have a look in PFT...they've got all sorts of plane type bits and pieces....never know, you might find another Norris smoother

Commonly found on planes, I believe...

Actually, given yours doesn't have the "S" casting mark, you probably want one minus the patent dates (iirc - and I probably don't  ) which might be fractionally easier to find. Of course "fractionally easier" probably still means "snowball's". Or you could just adjust it manually? Some folks even prefer using a light tap with a hammer for lateral adjustment despite the lever being present and correct.

Cheers, Alf

Do I smell a woodkateer outing to Salisbury in the near future?

Certainly will Rob, just got to prise martin away from his new saw.

If you fancy a trip to Weymouth in the near future to play with some tools, just let me know and I'll copple something together with the other Woodkateers.
