If you're desperate to drill HSS, I've had good results with 'locksmith's drills'. They are a fraction of the price of proper engineerium tackle, and have worked well for drilling tool steel and HSS spindle moulder blanks (when using a pillar drill). The price is worth a punt for a one off project.

Didn't know about those - thanks for the pointer.

(google is great, but you can only search for things you know the existence of)

I was hoping that the drills would arrive this morning so I could get it finished, but alas.
I'm not doing very much in the workshop at the mo, really, I'm trying to turn a bombsite into a garden. There is so much rubbish to get rid of and because of all the previous building work my garden is a good foot higher than my neighbours', more in some areas. I'll be here for ever.

Well good news, bad news.

The drills arrived this morning, so I've had a bash.

First, this is what I'm starting with:

The handle is actually laminated to get me a 1.4mm wide slot. You can just see the glue line here:

But after drilling just one hole, the drill looked like this:

Fortunately I had bought two drills, but worse was soon to follow:

Well I wasn't going to shorten it any more, so I've just epoxied it in. I've used a couple of brass screws as pins, but I was not able to get them in very much further than the steel itself. I remember peining over rivets at school. I can't remember when I last did it, but this brass was a lot harder than I expected it to be. It's not the neatest job in the world. TBH I wish I'd just epoxied it. Never mind it's all experience.

6/10, could do better.

Can you not just bury the excess? (homer)
