Pillar Drill Not Working

Out of the blue my pillar drill has stopped. Didn't mis-treat it or over load it.

Electricity is flowing in to the switch. Switch works and electricity flows to the motor when the switch is on.

Nothing happens though - except a steady low hum.

When off the drill, pulleys and motor turn freely.

When on - it can all be turned by hand but it wants to kick back to the same position.

Does anyone have any ideas??

Is it a simple low power induction motor?

If so start/run capacitor is the first suspect, would expect it to run on no load, possibly in either direction if spun up by hand.

It won't run if spun up - wants to return to the same spot.

Not sure about the type of motor - is there an easy way to tell?

^^^ this, almost certainly. You have to give it a really good spin, and it should run in either direction.

If you have a multimeter with capacitance measurement, try testing the capacitor against the rating on the side. If it doesn’t have that feature, use resistance mode. A bad cap will be open or short, a good one will show a rising reading, then the same if you swap leads.
