Pillar Drill advice needed

I've recently bought an old Elliot pillar drill, that has a 13mm keyless chuck. Problem is, the end of the chuck wobbles slightly, which means the drill bit does not run true. The spindle and the top of the chuck appear to be free of any sideways movement; just the adjustable part of the chuck.

I've uncsrewed the chuck and the 3 jaws promptly fell out and I'm struggling to put it back together!

Do I need a new chuck? How do I replace the chuck if I need to?
Any advice appreciated.

I would replace the chuck you should be able to get one cheap enough is the chuck screw on or on a taper.

I have to agree. Chucks don't last forever so a replacement is probably in order. Look for Jacobs of Röhm industrial chucks - these turn up on eBay from time to time.

The Elliot quite probably has a Morse Taper mounting as this is the norm on industrial drilling machines, however I'm not sure if it will be MT #1 or MT #2 (Meddings drills of this size are often MT #1). The quill often has a slot cut in it to allow you to to insert a steel wedge and knock the taper (and chuck) out. You may then find that the chuck is screwed onto the taper and that the two pieces can be separeted in a vice. You don't want to go bashing the chuck to unscrew it when it's on the drill as this can damage the drill bearings. When reinstalling make sure that the cone and taper parts are spotlessly clean - use a solvent but no heavy abrasives except possibly a quick wipe with a Scotch grey of red pad (very fine abrasive).
