and just to let you know.....

This was the very first item i had a go at turning (on my new lathe) last September, but only just managed to figure out the posting of pics bit...

It's a dibber made from Kapur (a species of Teak i believe), got loads of the stuff..... in-fact we burn it during the winter on the open fire...

Just as soon as i can i'll post a few more pics of the things i've had a go at doing.....

Nick (who has gathered enough momentum going down the slope theres no stopping him now....)

after the dibber came a bowl/platter.... still using Kapur, and still no 'real' idea of what i was doing or the correct tool to use.... :?

still the beginning of Sept '08 i then went and had a days tuition with John Davis at Chilbolton, and learnt (??) how to do coves, curves and all the other things that made it an interesting day. At the end of the day 'we' made this bowl......

then there was no stopping me......

this was a birthday present for a sister-in-law's 60th birthday near the end of Oct '08..... so turning has now reached 5 to 6 weeks.....

I then did a whole load of stuff as Xmas pressies.... small bowls/pot pourri dishs, boxs, mushrooms, more 'T' lights......

Then i think it was Shortly after Xmas i was asked if i could do a set of 'natural edge' coasters "but not round, i want them sort of eliptical..." she said, ok i'll have a go....

6 coasters and 2 'T' lights using Crack Willow.

I'm now 9 months down the 'slope' and really enjoying it....

I think i'm (sort of) lucky that i work with a lot of women..... i take the odd item or two in to get their opinions  and hey presto.... i come home with a few more orders to make some more bits and bobs. I don't make any money really.... but it does go towards the next lump of wood or chisel etc.

Just as soon as i get chance i'll post some more pics of the more recent stuff i've done.

Thanks for posting this Nick. Very nice work in such a short time.

I do like the rustic coasters !!

What an excellent selection of work, but the grain alignment on the spalted box is particularly impressive :D

Andrew

I like the coasters. I was thinking of doing some sets like that but not bothered. After seeing yours I think I'm going to now.

Bodrighy just to let you know..... the Crack Willow 'T' lights are finished using sanding sealer (on the grain ends) then all over using wax.

The Coasters are finished using 3 to 4 coats of sanding sealer then about (cant remember exactly) 4 coats of spray satin varnish.... as these obviously need to be waterproof.

Tried doing another set using Oak, but the grain was sooo much more open it took LOTS of sealer and far too much effort to try and get anything that looked like a decent finish... so won't be using that again. But here's a pic of the 'T' light in Oak from that set....

Thanks Nik. I have done T lights straight from a log before but usually have a glass insert for safety. The coasters look like a quick and simple, but effective use of bits of wood.
