I am building a sawtable with a hinged router table attatched to the end of it , because I only have a 6 foot square workshop and have to wheel it out onto the patio whenever I need to cut or route biggish stuff. My problem is the surface of the tables need to be covered in Phonelic sheet plastic, and I cannot find anywere in Leicester City that sells or has even heard of it Can anyone let me know where I might be able to get some from. Please.

Do you want phenolic faced ply or are you wanting sheet material to glue to the table?

Lathams in Wigston do phenolic faced ply.

Or do you just need formica or similar?

For some while I've been thinking of doing a similar thing to a router table I made aeons ago which has an aluminium top surface.

Thanks for that link Rod but I'm bewildered. What type of plastic 3/5 mm sheet would you recommend to fix down onto my ali router top? Thanks.

Roger

They sell Tufnol but I suppose any of the materials that provide excellent sliding properties and abrasion/wear resistance will do - like Nylon and some of the others. Also go by price.

What a nice happenchance - I found a 16mm thick sheet of this in a scrap yard not so long ago and built it as the top for my router table. It was just convenient at the time - I had no idea it was there would be such strong recommendation for it. Such is lady luck - she just doesn't visit me that often.

I'm amazed you found that in a Scottish scrapyard - far too valuable to throw away    whoever did it must have been on the Bells or Grants nectar when they scrapped it

Seriously though, a great find, I used to sell the stuff many moons ago and it ain't cheap. I'm off to our local scrappy in the morn !

yeah the stuff is very expensive and very hard to work with aswell it also expands alot in different temperatures

Story from the past concerning the temperature expansion - I'm a retired electronics engineer with a career predominantly in military avionics. I designed a phenolic resin block into a bit of electronics that ran at high temperature - it worked well, went through all the rigorous qualification testing (high and low temperature running, thermal shock, extended life, etc.) and passed with flying colours - good product , good job well done. Fortunately by coincidence I went elsewhere to work and only learnt some years later through the grapevine, that a complete mechanical redesign had to be done because all the testing didn't show up the effect of the expansion and contraction of the phenolic block - the units kept on breaking down for seemingly no apparant reason !!!

And Mr Lons - don't you going making digs at the Scots - it wasn't that long ago that Northumberland was part of Scotland and you were Scots too !!

i believe it is 2.5-3mm a m expantion, i know when doin toilet cubicles made of compactlaminate which same thing we have to leave minimum 4mm to the keep plate on the lock and have known 1 catch before with that gap after expantion
