Having been inspired a couple of weeks ago by Tony's (Escudo) excellent pencil gauge, I've had a go at one myself. Now this miserable offering:

is, or was, my original pencil gauge. The stem fitted the stock like a cheap suit...it fitted where it touched  but it wasn't really fit for the 'Tool Wall'
After a bit of rummaging around in the offcuts drawer, I came up with this:

in wenge (stock and wedge) and rosewood (stem and saddle...big thanks to Waka :D) The construction of the stock is my usual 4 part laminated concoction, glued up with the wedge in place (suitably waxed)...
The saddle prevents the gauge from closing right up:

...so with an uber-cunning cut out it will now close down to about 6mm, which is going to be good enough for most purposes. Finished with a couple of coats of polish and some wax over the top - Rob

Very handsome, and a good use for all those stubs of pencils that end up in the top drawer of your toolbox.
