I want to have a go at pen turning whats the essential equipment needed and is it a good idea to buy a kit such as the one Stile and Bates sell. Are there any other companies that sell starter kits

hiya dalboy, you will need,,
a pen mandrell
a pen kit
bushings to go with the penkit
a printed set of instructions for the penkit
a bottle of medium ca glue to glue in the brass tubes
a barell trimmer, to make the ends of your blanks square
some pen blanks min size 3/4 x3/4 x 5 1/2 inches long
normal turning tools
and of course something for the finish.
all these you can get from turners-retreat.
for the sake of a phone call they will advise you and not rip you off. hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply guys will try them both. Just trying to get an idea to start with makes it easier when I start to ask questions of the supplier about their products
