Hi John.....
I started doing pens about a year ago, and started off with the cheapest of cheap kits off of ebay at approx £1.50 per kit (similar ones from Axminster are around the £1.80 to £2 i believe...). Once i allow for p&p and a scrap of wood i sell the pens for £7.50 and the pencils for £9, and offer them in a velvet sleeve.
The next jump up in price of kits are costing around the £3.50 to £5ish mark, still off of ebay, Sierra, Cigar, Classic Elite etc.... again allowing for p&p + wood.... i sell for between £10 and £15, and offer these in a velvet drawstring bag.
From here it's a mega jump up to 'quality' kits from the likes of Turners Retreat etc. Gent's fountain & rollerball's and the Gent's Classic set which is more of a lady's size pen. These... depending on the wood used i've sold for just over the £100 mark for a set of two, and more recently a Gent's fountain and slimline pencil in matt ebony i sold for £75. But i do offer these in a nice presentation case costing around £5.
The cheap ones i sell the my co workers who are pleased to pay that price as they often buy them just as gifts. The really expensive ones i've made so far have been bought as gifts to a husband, gifts as a wedding present. I made one as a gift for my other half who (normally) only writes with a fountain pen. And most recently sold to the end user.... the ebony one, he wanted something that didn't look too expensive, and so wouldn't get 'nicked' from his desk, but wrote beautifully.....
Some may say "way too cheap....." & some may say "way too expensive....", i'd be interested to hear back from others what they sell theirs for...? Plus.... this is just a hobby for me.... any monies go towards the next chisel or bit of kit i'm after.
I've had a go at a few 'plastic' ones, but the response was rather negative.... so have stuck to wood.
Hope this helps....??
Nick
