Another gift from an Australian forum member.

The piece of ebony, should I retain for making pen ring decorations or a slimline pen?

ebony is a lovely piece of wood for pens, but it is just like snakewood,, prone to cracking. i would be tempted to use it on a slimline or use it for segmenting your other pens. nice gift too, by the way,

I have since learnt that the timbers are:-

The reddy timber is Sydney Blue Gum and the yellowy timber is Stringybark and the black timber is probably a rosewood.

Funkychicken was my pen swap partner just before the summer. Members of the Austrailian pen turning forum were paired up to do a pen swap, and i got Funkychicken. He did say that he was coming to UK, but he would not be traveling as far north as Scotland, to visit me.
It's a small world. :D
