Anyone on here use PDV salt (rather than granular or tablet) in their water softener.?

Only ask as its cheaper than granular.

didnt think to google it.......................

might depend on the softener, mine states to use tablet salt

My missus gave up using salt years ago, uses all in one tablets or sachets whichever are cheaper.

I know where the dishwasher is and how to put stuff in it but the rest is womans stuff. Same with cooker, washing machine, vacuum etc.

The only water softening in our house is a water jug (Britta, I think) for the wife. I just take it as it comes out the tap and scrub the limescale out of the kettle every once in a while. Ours has glass sides so you can see when it's getting a bit manky.

We do live in a hard water area though and I do work for a water company, so I just asked around some of the office and engineer bods, here. General consensus is that it works fine, about as good as all the other options and mostly down to personal preference, but try it for yourself and see if you notice a difference. A couple suggested doing it secretly and seeing if anyone else in your house notices.

My daughter will be learning a lot from her daddy, so certain things I have to be good at... or at least better than the womenfolk. It's also a matter of pride!
She can't vacuum anyway due to allergies, my dishwasher logistics are always proper clean... and while she may be queen of roast/Christmas dinners, she can't even manage Bisto gravy. We won't even begin to talk about rice, stir fry, English breakfast, haggis... and I am, of course, the braai-master of the house!

PDV is fine to use as long as your salt intake is designed for it. Tablets are recommended because they dissolve slowly without blocking the brine intake pipe and are often poured in to surround the brine intake pipe. PDV salt is generally used in a brine tank which has a brine table or salt grid and a brine well so that the salt solids are unable to be drawn into the softener.

The salt sits on the salt grid (3) and permeates into the brine well (2) where it is sucked up via the footvalve (8)..

p.s. PDV is fine for cooking and, in my case, free. :D

@ whiskywill.... you seem to be fairly 'clued up'(?) re water softeners... any idea why a salt 'crust' forms around parts of the top exposed edge of the brine tank.? I've tried googling it but with little/no result.

I work for a water treatment company.

I don't know why you have salt crust. This would only be left if it had been splashed with brine which later evaporated leaving the salt behind. Has that part of the tank ever been wetted by the brine?

Reading htis lot reminds me why I love just normal Scottish water
