Paul Sellers work bench

Looking to build this work bench and found this supplier near by, would this be suitable pine for a work bench build. Hopefully I could pick though it to find the straightest pieces.

I was just looking at those for the same purpose too (but i am no way near that location though)

I don't see why it wouldn't be suitable however this is rough sawn timber (Paul use PAR) to make his workbench. you would need to prep those before you can do anything with it. If you have a planner/thicknesser not to much an issue, if you haven't it might take you a while using a hand plane.

For Red wood if I got those it would cost about £85, I've been quoted £3.34/m locally for 44 x 94 Par which works out at£153. Eased edge'd is only £2/m but then you have to plane it down to get rid of the eased edge.

Only other alternative is 44x69 Scant which is planed but wasnt sure if it was a bit to shallow :/

Thats only £1.45/m so bar far the cheapest option and its planed, from what I've had already its really knotty thou. Decisions :lol:

When I bought 2 x 4 PAR Redwood for my bench a couple of years ago I paid £2.62 per mtr.
If I were you I would try shopping around for a better price and if you're lucky you might even get given a trade discount.

Eased edged - CLS? It makes the joints untidy and difficult to mark out, but if it's cheap enough and you're watching your expenditure you could double up the legs ...

I've started this now, went with redwood in the end as it just looked better. Two question now that I'm toying with

Which Glue, is any old PVA good enough or should I use titebond/gorilla glue. I've not used either, only wilko's own which seemed ok but I dont want this coming apart as I'm spending so much time on it !

Paul Sellers uses 3 2x3's in the well, would 1x3's be enough or should I get 2x3's and notch them down an inch. Just thinking about depth of the well.

Looking at your pictures it seems to me that ALL of the boards have the pith included. Will this not lead to severe movement in whatever you make from them. Sorry if I'm being negative. I've never bought/accepted or used wood like this.

I made my workbench from redwood, some of my boards have pith in them and they have cupped badly to the point I'm considering remaking my bench. Lesson learnt, done accept rubbish boards.

Well it appears the 2x4's I got are full of pith and heart wood, I unfortunately didn't know any better when I got it. I bought only half the timber I needed and I'm tempted to use What I have for the legs and rear apron and try to find a better supply for the top and front apron. I went back down the timber merchants today and the quality of 2x3 & 2x4's is shocking ! But when they go to 2x6 there almost all clear and not heartwood. I'm thinking of trying to get some 2x8 and ripping it to 2x4... Sound sensible ?

2x8 ripped down tends to be better than 2x4 in my experience. I wouldn't touch the 2x4 from my local place, even for things like a lathe stand.

Funny you should say that. I salvaged some 3x2 this week and it was pretty good stuff, on close inspection I realised that it had been 6x2 that had been ripped down the middle.

Chris Schwarz has mentioned about finding better wood in the larger sizes of dimentioned house building timber, hadn't really taken any notice of it till now.

Not a job I would want to do by hand though

I assume your local place is in the USA?
