Painting wooden kitchen cabinets

Hi there. My son recently bought a house in Texas and their kitchen units are solid wood but dated. They were quoted $9000 to get them painted..but I figured using a random orbital sander to prep (he bought a Bosch one) and then spray the coats of undercoat and top coat on would work. Is it difficult to use a sprayer and any advice on type of sprayer? Thanks. Cat
