Hi, I've decided to paint the tiles in my hallway . My dad thinks that they are thermoplastic - they are dark brown and generally sound and very securely fixed down ...apart from around the edges . Some have come up and there is probably about a few cubic feet missing . I was hoping to be able to use self levelling compound around the edge to fill in the gaps and then paint over the tiles , but I have heard that the tiles can melt easily . Does anyone have any experience of this or any advice . I was originally thinking of covering the tiles in vinyl strips , but I thought painting would be cheaper . Laminate floor is not an option due to the fact its a 3rd floor council flat , they have regulations re noise and I would still have the problem of the uneven floor .

Is there no possibility of getting local authority to replace the missing tiles, assuming you are renting?
If the tiles are 1960's era Marley tiles, asbestos or fibre reinforced plastic, (hard and brittle until heated) they will take gloss paint without a problem in my experience.
Be careful what paint you use for covering a large area, volatiles may be a problem requiring plenty of ventilation.

This says Asbestos was used in flooring until 1983,---http://www.mesothelioma.com/asbestos-exposure/companies/congoleum.htm
I believe Nairn was used in council built property, even here, in Sunny Devon.
