Paint and preserve planter

Morning all,

built some planters from leftover untreated cls and plywood. The other half wants them painted blue or something. What’s a suitable method to preserve, paint and protect and any recommended products?

I made some planters out of sleepers (not reclaimed railway ones) about four years ago and painted them black with this Cuprinol Garden Shades - Colour & Protect | Cuprinol
They still look as good as when they were first painted.
