Well having made my first ever scroll piece yesterday I decided to give a go again today.

It's a friends birthday tomorrow so I asked her what animals she likes - thinking I can do dolphins :) and maybe a few others from Lora Irish's Wildlife patterns for the scroll saw book.

So she says she likes Salamanders! Hmmm no salamander pattern in the book so I look up images on-line and eventually come across some on google images search for 'Salamander Tattoos'.

Found one I liked and looked like it would make a good scroll pattern - only problem is it is very fiddly with lots of fine cuts which eventually lead to a few breakages (especially in the head area) but still did not turn out too bad for my second ever piece ....

I'm using a No. 5 Pegas Reverse skip tooth blade with 6mm ply on the Excalibur EX 30

What do you think ?

Very nice Martin and as for the eyes on the Salamander tell her its one of the recently discovered cave dwelling type who because they never venture outside they don't need eyes to see and use their built in sonar to detect prey 9-) if ya believe that you will believe anything lol
Cheers and keep up the great work...... I think you have caught the bug?

You have done a good job there and I am sure the lady in question will love it. I was asked to do a lizard a little while back. Like you I sometimes have to resort to google images to find exactly what I am looking for. When I do find an image that fits the bill it is very rare that it can be printed off and glued to a piece of wood. When I see the pattern I look for the weak spots and adjust the image so that it is more scroll saw friendly. This will include widening lines, shortening some of the internal cuts and various other bits and pieces.
