A good man passed over the bar on Tuesday and I am going to miss him. Heck. I miss him already.

And you'll keep on missing him. 'Dads' are special, very special, even more so when they're Grand-Dads. I lost my Dad 7 yrs ago. Miss him more every day and that will never change.

Deepest sympathy Dave. My thoughts are with you.

Roy

Deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Sadly, its when you lose someone close that you realise you should have spent more time with them. It seems a daft thing to say really. I lost my father some 11 years ago and it was only then I realised I knew little about his childhood, and his service during the war. It's only now with help of Ancestry.co.uk that we are piecing together the family tree.

Thank you all.

Hanser, my father and I started working on our ancestry about 7 or 8 weeks ago, before he found out about the cancer. I knew very little about my family on his side. In a few hours I had vastly improved my knowledge and over about 3 weeks, I had identified ancestors back to the 1600s in Sussex. My father and I were having fun piecing things together. We managed to find and contact a second cousin of his in NZ who happens to be the family historian. With his help and the help of some nice folks in Leics, I have even traced my great grandfather to the clump of trees where the house he was born and raised in stood in Brentingby. Thanks to the kind efforts of Steve Maskery, I even have some photos from the area.

I wish we'd started this much earlier. :(

It is what it is.

Thank you all, again, for the nice words. They help.

Sorry to hear of your loss, my advice 'remember the good times', the pain never goes it just somehow gets more bearable.

+ 1 to Stew's lament, someone who lives in your heart lives for ever...bosshogg

a pessimist complains about draughts, an optimist states the change could be due simply to air leakage getting into the building, a pragmatist gets up and shuts the door

Very sad news Dave, I know just how it feels, I lost my father 12 years ago and we were very close. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Thank you all.

Karl, as to raising a glass to him, never fear. In fact he has a bottle of real moonshine that's never been opened. He was waiting until we were all together to open it. Well, Monday night will be the night we open it and raise a toast to him.

condolences to you and your family dave. i do feel for you mate. all the best and take care.
