Our biggest and best tree was damaged by a storm last night:

It's an Ash I think (rubbish on tree ID):

It obviously has some rot which is evident where the limb snapped:

Few questions:
Is there any way of establishing how extensive the rot is?
Once I remove the fallen limb is there anything I can do to treat the exposed rot?
The rest of the tree will need pruning and maybe topping, any good advice or resources?
Is the tree likely to survive?

It might be advisable to get someone in to check the safety of the tree. From the picture it looks as though there is quite a bit of rot where the branch broke away. Rot tends to travel down within the trunk so you can't always know have safe the tree is. In the past I've declined to take such trees because from experience I've found the main trunk to be too rotten to work.

Noel,

I'm no expert but from the close up, the remaining trunk at that point looks very weak. I'll email the pics to my Dad and ask him -- he used to do some tree surgery and should have a better idea.

Cheers,
Neil
(Hi by the way, keep meaning to call you)

Another decent wind and I reckon the top will come off at the same place. Get it cut down that far at least. I expect the rot will have travelled down further though, putting the lateral branches at risk, so probably best to take those off too. It's an ash, which will pollard further down when you find decent wood.

hi noel
it is an Ash by the look of it, and i think you should call an arborist (tree surgeon) and get their opinion on how to proceed from here, it all depends on how much rot is in it.
