Hi all,

Well I have to admit, I can't find wall sockets in UK. I need to have one wall mounted socket in order to switch an english Tormek to a continental plug system. I could easily fit a continental plug to the machine, but it probably would annihilate any warrantee. First I thought looking for a travel adaptor but those didn't make me feel very confident. I came down to install a UK on wall power socket. Could someone point me to a retailer please.

Thanks

Hi Marc

Have a look at the following links for UK switch sockets

links removed.

This is what I use wilst traveling in Germany Fixed single way adapter and quite robust: Has earth contacts for German and French sockets.

Marc - I can't speak for Luxembourg, but to include a UK socket in a French wiring system would cause it to fail the controle, and may invalidate the house insurance. May be worth checking with a Luxemberger sparks.

I would change the plug, and any company who tried to invalidate the warranty on the basis of that would get some massive abuse until they relented.

Might be worth checking with the company though before the plug is changed (that's if you change it) just to see if the warranty will be affected - Rob

Hi All,

Thank you all for your help, the company will be asked on Monday, but I'm bit of sceptical. If they say now it is okay to install another plug on their machines, how will it be if the machine is actually on their repair bench. The adaptor seems to be the most elegant solution at the moment again, without possibly affecting house insurance or loss of warranty.

Again thank you for your help!

Marc - rather than change the plug or use an adaptor - which is only designed for about 5 amps IIRC - why not make up a short extension cable with a UK socket on one end and a Euro plug on the other? You could even go for a fused type. I have done several of these for our place in France for equipment that I move about and don't want to change the plugs on.

Dick, the adaptor I reference is rated at 7.5 amps, but indeed both here in the UK and in Germany the family has multiple extension lead adaptors going both ways so that equipment is mobile between homes.

I think Marcs' main problem is in actually obtaining the bits to do just that.

I think some of you lot worry far too much sometimes. What would you do if (like I did on my bandsaw) you stepped on the plug and bent the prongs? I changed the plug, and certainly didn't call up Startrite to check whether that was OK. What's the difference?

I must admit that it was something I never gave a thought to with any machines or domestic appliances. What I would never use are the adapters sold as travel devices - no earth and far too flimsy.

Rather an incorrect generalization there, if you note the one referred to above by myself.

Fixed single way adapter and quite robust: Has earth contacts for German and French sockets.

But in the instance of the Tormek I personally would change the Plug to local pattern, chances of the motor failing with warrantee is very slight and I am sure a UK replacement could soon be fitted if necessary.
