Hiya

I am thinking of purchasing the Veritas Low Angle, Bevel-Up Jointer.
From reading the posts in related topics on this forum it is hard to decide if is the best possible buy.
Can you people let me know your opinions on the pros and cons please?

I am thinking with the Guide and extra blades I would have a nice Jointer setup.

From what I have read it seems these blades can also be used in the other bevel up models, is this correct?

Whilst I am here I may as well find out the best sharpening options for these blades are as well.

Oh and if anyone knows where the best purchase price for these can be had I would be grateful!

I have bought several Veritas planes.

Good tools for the price and great to use.

If you can be patient then buy direct and get them sent to you via US Postal. If you are lucky enough you do not pay VAT - BUT be prepared for that you sometimes get hit with it!

If not, then I have found between the local suppliers in UK there is not real price difference between any of them for the LV planes. Maybe £1 unless someone runs a special if you are lucky.

Maybe someone knows better? Hopefully - as I wish to purchase another two small planes.

Cheers.

I have the LV BU jointer and fence and have not been disappointed, it is a lovely piece of kit. I also have the BU jack and smoother. You are correct the blades are interchangable between the 3 planes.

regarding the purchase I ordered mine from LV and had it shipped serfice mail, it tool about 6 weeks. Even with paying customs etc it weorked out a lot cheaper than getting it in the UK.

If you make the purchase I know that you will not be disappointed with the plane.

I use hand planes more than any other tool.
I have 2 and nobody gets them out of my fingers. As near to perfect as you'll find, in my opinion. There is nothing out there below several thousand pounds that is better.

I bought the BUJ and guide after catching a high temperature at Yandles

following Wakas advice I ordered direct and was charged by customs but I still saved in the region of £80

BTW you will not be disappointed it is a lovely plane

Hi Whiteant,

Ditto the above comments, the BUJ is highly regarded and with good reason, especially if you use the whole system.

You may want to move quickly though if you want to save a few quid. Brimarc - the UK importer and distributor - released a new Veritas price list at the beginning of October and the RRP for the planes went up by some 15%. Not unexpected given the rocketing price of metals, but once the current stocks held by us retailers run out, the price increases will have to filter through.

Cheers,

Matthew

I have a BU jack and really love it. It is one of my favorite planes to use. \:D/ I can imagine the jointer being just as nice.

I have both the Low Angle Jack and the Bevel Up Jointer, they are fantastic. And they share the same irons (so does the Bevel Up Smoother, but I don't like this one as much, not a performance but a "feel" issue).

As for the fence, I tried it but ended up not buying it. I figure that for jointing boards for a glue-up bookmatching the boards' edges will give me a tight joint, and for edges not joined to another it doesn't really matter if the plane is off by half a degree...

Hope I'm not too late, but the best deal at the moment for the BUJ is at D&M tools.

Sorry I couldn't post this the other day, but I was in the process of ordering one and didn't want a rush of people ordering them as well if it was a pricing mistake. But, mine has shipped I am told, and the price is still the same. Shame the same discount isn't available on the whole range!

After a mistake in pricing we have a revised price on this plane. Please do ensure you confirm your saving as the price quoted above is not a special offer.

If anyone paid the incorrect price we will be arranging refunds through your retailer.

Apologies.

Martin and the BriMarc team

Sorry, not sure I follow you - is £170 the new RRP then?

Much better value at that price - well, I bought one, and I wasn't even tempted to at the old price.

Good news for everyone then.

But I am a little sad that it wasn't the result of retailer competition, but a revision in the RRP.

IIRC, it was the only one in the range that was out of line with the dollar price.

Cheers

Yes, I realise. It was also more than the LN equivalent.

Still would have made me happier if the D&M pricing had been due to some genuine competition on prices developing at a retail level.
