Ok gents

I have just rubbed an old family heirloom back to bare, got shot of all the old cracked varnish on the top, but left the legs ( which were ok ) alone.
The top was split down the middle(ish) but is now repaired nicely.

I shall post some pics tomorrow of the whole process, but what I need to know is the most sympathetic way of finishing the top. I think I need to use 'Jacobean Dark Oak' stain, but wanted a clear, maybe a matt?, varnish to put on afterward. Could I spray? Or should I stick with a brush?

Whaddya think guys? You could really help here, if you come up with a great plan it could end up finishing my table which will in turn end up in a manor in france!!!!

Thanks anyway folks.

ok deedee, I like the look of that enough to spend some money. How much and where do I get the stuff?

Thanks for taking the time to answer me.

Cheers one and all.

Can I put the opposite point of view?
I discovered Patina years ago, and used it a lot.

Then I spent years getting rid of it. It dulls down over time, leaves a slightly sticky surface and beats all the glow out of nice wood.

Now I use Danish Oil and Brywax.
