Could the weld be a worthwhile repair, then. I know engineers go to lengths inserting repair metal mechanically rather than welding, when it comes to cast iron, to avoid 'white iron' which is a point of future failure, besides the difficulty in maintaing the sole linearity. I think I would still ditch a broken body, they are flippin' ugly, too.

My offer of a free Stanley No. 2 to the OP, if postage is paid, still stands. I was only joking about the proviso of not buying any more junk tools! (Just a hope really)

I seem to have developed a thing for old planes (have an existing thread on them in hand tools) and they don't chafe like rubber

Take the no2 toby and make Mike something nice with it - that's a very generous offer

On the subject of buying old wrecks, I took delivery of a Stanley (USA) No.8 this week. Cost me $9.50 (a little under £5) 8)

It's a type 8 from 1893-99. With 'S' marks on the castings...

Unfortunately, it's got a broken frog...

Even more unfortunately, that's not all....

3½" off the front and heaps off the back, it's now about the length of a No.4½.

I bought the thing out of curiosity, and for spares. But it's in reasonable condition and I might just repair the tote and use it.

It can be my No.4¾ :mrgreen:
