I just pineappled myself laughing at the last 4 posts.. I read them to the missus who just looked at me blankly, I had to explain the references... /sigh...

Not heard the term 'pineappled' before - I hope what Mr Google suggests this urban word means isn't quite what Pvt_Ryan meant ! :D :D

Hi Steve....that is good to know! I am still feeling ok...but I was particularly concerned of the heart rhythm being affected bit when I googled it..given that I have just had the bypass!

If you have any bits where the sap/heartwood transition is longer than 13" then I am your man! More than happy to pay for them and the postage! PM me if you think you have something suitable.

Jim

Hi Jim

I shall have to go rummaging through my planks and get back to you later on if there is anything which fits your needs...
I have no idea what I will ever do with most of my offcuts but you never throw anything away just in case!
cheers

I once made a combe back rocker and elbow chair to match, This involved turning iro 60-80 spindles 30"x 3/4" and legs etc.. I can tell you by experience the dust does make you feel sick.... I had a couple of days off due to stomach cramps... I am informed that though poisonous you would need to consume the equivelent of a small bush to make you ill... It is poisonous but mostly to birds and other small mammals. It is also toxic to most wood vermin like woodworm... Most wood is attacked by worm inc oak but only the sap... Yew is immune due to its toxisity... I would'nt go making food vesels out of it though, just in case... :)

I think the French found it quite deadly in 1415.... V

HA, Would that be the Battle of Agincourt? Good old English Yew longbows won the day... I particularly love the two fingered salute they gave the French...they (The French) were ordered to chop off the middle fingers of the english bowmen....

Absolutely.. Hence my reminder ( V ) as to where the gesture came from.

And yes... Woe betide any English bowman who was captured.

Unfortunately the V sign story is a fairly recent urban myth but still it is a good one given the traditional English antipathy to our neighbors across the channel.

Oh! Okay then. I didden know that!

I think the myth is better than the tryth!

Personally my only gripe with the French (Apart from 1066) is that they don't know how to cook shellfish. They almost did for my Missus with their seafood!

Cheers Fixer

I think the bit about Urban Myth is in itself an urban myth as I read on one site that it comes from the 70s when the term was first coined. I remember my father telling me about the story as a kid and that predates computers let alone urban myths!

I really don't care either because it is a really great story...whoever thought it up probably wrote "The Life Of Brian" too!

I don't know when I first heard it, but it was some time ago. Also, although I can't be sure, I believe I heard the story recounted on 'War Walks', by Richard Holmes. I don't think I'll be buying the book, just to check!

Although, it's time I had a copy... I know! I'll wait until Christmas and get my daughter to buy it for me! Books are her first 'go-to' when it comes to buying me pressies!

Hi Jimi

Not sure if any of these dubious Yew boards are of interest for you?

I have labelled them A-F and I need to measure them up if you are interested in any of them.

The straight edge is about 1 metre long.

B is thicker than others at about 32mm. Most of them around 20-25mm.

I don't think they are that useful, maybe ok for something small.

cheers
Steve
