Popped in to my tree surgeon friend on Saturday, said he had got something for me
He had just cut a huge Beech tree down earlier in the week.
So i rang me mate who as got one of those Toyota pick ups and we filled the back of it.
Now all i've gotta do is get some of it to spalt :D
George where are you :D

This is just some of it.The trunk is about 48" diam easy, which he is going to cut some up for me.
And yes it is more logs under the tarp

Methinks you should get a bit more lathe time in Paul.

Isn't it going to be a bit awkward mowing the grass.

...and I thought you had a lot of timber drying out already
Huge shed down the side of the garage, half the lawn, and still trying to get more..

Andrew

I think this will be me lot now as i do have a varied choice now
I did ask my tree surgeon if and when he did cut some Beech down that i would have some, but that was ages ago. This is the first Beech he as cut down for a few years
All the logs are on bark chippings, which was the kids play area,so i hope this will help with the spalting,so i haven't got to worry about cutting the grass, not at the moment anyhow :D

great wood paul!!!!!!!!

if you want it to spalt? swap that plastic for somthing like old curtains, dust sheets etc- reduce airflow to near nill, no direct sun, plenty of moisture, and some weak liquid plant food to kick things off.

Wont that lot wear your chisels down.

Yesterday I could see the edge disappearing from my tool.

Tools ARE for using John, unless of course you have sliped over to the side of the collectors.

Regardless of how soft you think the wood is you will find that turning tools will loose their edge much faster than hand tools, most woods carry a percentage of silica of one sort or another, often in the form of trapped windblown sand/dust and at lathe speeds you cover a very big surface distance in a short time with a very small tool contact edge.

Under the blue tarp is other woods,Cherry,Laburum,Sycamore,Yew,Apple, and some others i've forgot.
These wood i am trying to dry out. :?:
Do i put the plant feed directly onto the logs end grain end or when the logs are covered :?: :?

hi paul what i do is when the logs are in what will be there resting place for the next 18mths or so- water the logs gettting them welll drenched then cover them up and water the covering.
another little tip i picked up was to cut just through the cambium layer in effect just nicking the surface every so often with my saw.
also i use some shavings between my logs when there stacked on end
