Have just finished a endgrain chopping board for a friend who is allergic to nuts and would like to finish it with some suitable oil that is nut free or maybe some food safe varnish

Both liberian and Chestnut produce finishing oils which are said to be safe for food. I suggest you visit their websites and have a look at the product data sheets. If it is not clear from those, email them and ask the question; makers are usually very helpful with this sort of thing. I have used Organoil finishing oil which is citrus oil based (and really smells like it) and food safe. I used it on a knife block to good effect - it really is very penetrating. I got it from Axminster but am not sure whether they still have it, but other suppliers may do. It comes from Australia of all places.

The Chestnut Food Safe Oil is a Light Grade BPC Liquid Paraffin, I guess if it's safe to be taken orally it is about as safe as possible.

Normal Chemists BPC Liquid paraffin is somewhat thicker and takes longer to dry off, IKEA has a version with viscosity about half way in between.

I'd agree and add the cheapest source is places that sell stuff for horses. If its marked BP the quality & purity is to some extent assured.
