OK , Today I mounted it on a face plate

trued it up into a cylinder and trued up the base , then started to shape the bottom

:lol: , Yes I said bottom :lol:

Then turned the dovetail for the chuck and the foot

Sand trough the grades and sanding sealer , the 1 coat of Wax , and this is it so far

Had some problems with tare out on the end grain , but with some effort its now sorted :wink:

will do some more ASAP as I am off to work soon :cry:

Just brought the same nutcraker but the blank I have is olive Ash.

Be interesting to see how they turn out.

.... and sell at a craft fair for 30 quid if you're lucky........

you need to put your prices up nick - the last one of these i sold at a craft fair was 75 notes !
 
Today I drilled through the blank and opend up the hole in the base for the bolt that holds the nut cracker in .

The reversed the blank onto the chuck , and started to remove the inside of the bowl

Looks like it will have some nice spalting and wavy in the wood :p

need to turn the top to fit the nut cracker , will do that tomorrow :lol:

its off to the PUB TIME SOON :wink: and a ruby Murry :p :p
 
Well that's that finished

Rather pleased with the finished item :lol:

Roll on Xmas , get some nuts to munch :p

Sorry - I didnt mean that in a sarcastic way - i was just trying to picture how it was done, and failed !

So the bolt is buried in the base in a recess ?then plugged up. Do you also glue the bolt into the shaft you drilled ? - or is the tightness of the cracker/bolt enough ?

I made the hole big enough to put a socket from a socket set to tighten the bolt , no glue on the thread , the turned a plug to cover the bolt head
 
Nice piece, and practical - is it me, or are nuts harder to open these days :shock: ?
I recently picked up someone else's turned bowl complete with the brass mechanism at a jumble sale for 50p, but I don't really like the "ship's wheel" style for the handle. (and the one I've got has a white plastic rim) Not sure what to replace it with - I was wondering about something more like a lathe handwheel, or possibly a capstan style tap top. Any suggestions?
