One thing I found after starting turning was I began looking at trees in a whole new way. The eye is drawn to interesting wood features and picturing how a particular bit will look as a bowl. Sometimes also thinking it a pity chainsaws are so loud.

I've got 2 oaks on site that are completely covered in burr and epicormic growths, if they ever have to be felled they will quickly be gathered up and hidden from everyone whilst I do my best gollum impressions

You make a good point. One word that the Yanks kept and we lost but that I prefer, is "Fall" to denote autumn - much more descriptive...Only partly right.
