I'm going to be in New York in transit on July 2/3rd - Newark Airport. Is there a GOOD woodworking store within reasonable travelling distance of the aiprport? I've got about ten hours to kill and I thought I might try to pick up some small goods (or arrange bigger ones to be mailed home)and just have a good browse. I don't mind getting transport into the Big Apple, but as I'll be being trailed by 10 Sixth Formers at the time, I'd rather avoid stores in questionable areas?

'fraid I'm not American but......
The only decent tool store that I know of in NYC is
http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/
The nearest Woodcraft is in upstate NY. I'm sure there's other stores in the city but by all accounts toolsforwoodworking is very good. Although they're primarily a mail order company they do have a small "walk in" facility on the 2nd floor(?) and, best of all, there's a "try before you buy" set up for various tools.
Check out www.newarkairport.com for trains etc.

Very gallant of you to give up part of your summer break in pursuit of cultural discovery for our younger citizens.
When you reach Newark give each of them $20 or so of their spending money and point them in the direction of the nearest bar. Should give you a bit of peace and quiet whilst you head off and see some tools...

Sorry, I am American, but not from anywhere near New York (about 1200 miles away.) The nearest good place I know is about 3 hours by car--Grizzly Industrial in Muncy, Pa. You say you're in transit. Are you travelling elsewhere in the States?

I have a nasty feeling that Tools For Working Wood could be in a bit of a dodgy spot from something Joel, the owner, said elsewhere.

Cheers, Alf

Thanks for the pointers folks, I'm trying to distill addresses out of the web sites recommended.

As to the query am I staying in the former British colony? Nope. I'm off to Lima and then Iquitos, N. Peru. A mixture of charity work and trekking for a month. I've just acquired a Portable Digital Memory Whatyamcallit, so I'm aiming to take 1000Mb of digital stills and videos - promise I'll save some for woodbutchering, Peruvian style. What's the betting they've never heard of Sheppard, Holtey, LV, LN, or Ian Dalziel?

Alf, if I find a really grimey chisel by the Pissaro Brothers, or a Coquistadores brand plane will I bring them back for you? I mean, genuine Seville steel, sword blade turned carpentering tool, it would be the ultimate boot sale find wouldn't it?

Feel fee to drop Joel an email to inqure. He's a good guy. It is a walk in store and people visit all the time.

Take care, Mike

Sammie,

The furniture exhibits at the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art are outstanding and you could take the young folks along as well. You can spend hours here seeing just the furniture exhibits.

The problem is going to be transportation from the Newark airport to Manhattan. It is only 16 miles, but no public transportation that I am aware of, only taxis and shuttle buses that will run $20 and up per person.

Joel's place is off the beaten path but I did not feel the least bit uncomfortable and I went by myself and I'm a girl :D

Have a great trip!

I've wanted to see the Metroploitan since 1977 when my tutor Royall T. Moore introduced me to its mail order catalogue. That HAS to be a stop or THE stop.

Thank you to everyone who offered advice, it has helped crystallise my aspirations for the Big Apple.

I've investigated via the Newark Website (Ta! Noel.) and I think I can go to Central Station by rail, then strike out fom there. I'll let you know how I get on in August or perhaps if the pirhanna don't get me, via an on liana from the the Amazon headwaters....geddit? On line...on lianna...
