Well, yes  - although these are getting darned difficult to find. So here's your last chance for a while to "name that Machine". This week we have three of varying difficulty (and none from the railway environment, ta), the first one should be easy as these are still in everyday use:

The second is a bit more difficult, but there will be a few who'll guess it:

Whilst the third one should cause a few heads to be scratched:

Enjoy!

No 1 is a saw, but not a resaw. Any more takers?

No 1 is some kind of reciprocating saw, like a dirty great big scrollsaw.

No 2 is a double-ended drum sander (for different grits)

No 3 is a fixed angle, double-headed, overhead camshaft, twin-carb, fuel-injected truss-fixer.

Er....no, it is a saw of some type, but not a scroll saw

Well it is double-ended, but not a sander......

I will have another go

No 3 a veneer cutter
You're going in the right direction, but it's not that. Also before anyone suggests it it is not a heavy-duty Battenburg cake slicer, either......

You know I think I prefer some of the suggestions to the real answers at times

No 3 looks like some kind of veneer guilotine.

Whoops just seen someone has guest that already

no 1 is a straightliner with the power feed, the modern ones also have a laser beam to enable accurate feed ,,2 & 3 i have no idea.

Robinsons orange juice machines maybe.

Spot on! No 1 is a Wadkin PU straight line edger c.1936 - a sort of rip saw with an overhead power feed. These machines are designed to saw parallel strips off planks (and hence aren't technically resaws because they only do about 3 to 4in depth). I know of at least one firm locally who still uses a PU to strip cut hardwoods going into their 4-sided moulders. A very heavy piece of kit indeed.

Edit: One point I missed from my original post - a straight liner produces a cut so straight and true that it can be glued-up. That meand these machines are used in the production of staved solid-wood kitchen worktops, built-up cornice mouldings, etc where the elimination of the jointing step considerably speeds=up production

I've used the straightliner a few times,& they really are a joy once they are setup, with the laserbeam--it really makes short work of converting timber.

regards.

Still waiting for someone to bag No.3. It is a guillotine, but what for?

Happy New Year Scrit.

My guesses are:

#1 Rip saw with power feed.

#2 Box/finger joint cutter. (For drawers or boxes.) I think I see big saw teeth through the slot on the left side of the beast.

#3 Guillotine for trimming paper, books etc. My other thought was a shear for slicing shavings for packaging.

Thanks for making us think on the one day of the year when our brains feel like they are too big for their container. :eek:ccasion4:

Very close, but not quite there yet. Think about the invention of a fellow Canadian and you'll have it

Nope. It doesn't actiually trim anything, but it makes something.....
