I'm about to embark on building my first set of gates. I decided to move my carpenters vice to make it more useable. Screwed it all into place, Then found out that the casting has stripped it's threads. I can get round not using it, but it's going to be harder than I need it to be.

If its a record quick release, you have a good chance of repairing it just by cleaning the half nut very thoroughly.

No, Only a cheapy. My own fault. I had closed a steel hoop with it using a lot of force. Thought I had got away with but obviously not

Out of curiosity... how did you avoid bending the tommy bar? They are designed to yield long before the thread should, it’s a good way to see if a vice has been abused

Yes, it's strange, was there a defect that allowed you to apply so much force as to remove the thread from the vice, or are you just very strong and use an older vice that doesn't have that sort of "safety" function?

Errr, I have to confess, The tommy bar DID bend, a lot, Not helped by putting a steel tube on it. Yes I know, my fault.
