Hi all,
Heard about a garage sale just down the road from me so wandered along and was first there; sitting in the corner was this cardboard box of old tools with a rag over it; lifted rag, took a peek and said 'How much?'
He said 'Is it worth a tenner to you? I said 'Yes' and home I went.

Got home and opened box with trembling fingers and found this lot:

Could not believe my luck to find this in there:

Norris01.jpg

It is only 7" long and very heavy, I have no idea of the model number or type.
The chisels and gouges are all Addis, Sorby and Marples the saws are by Trojan & Co and by what looks like Tazeon & Co, both only 7" long, any thoughts MikeW?
I am going to have hours of fun cleaning this lot up and my Excalibur gets closer and closer!
Regards
Martin

:D nice one martin but you are going to need to get the lathe out as well and the had saw s look nice to :D

Why you lucky... :x (This jealous smiley   is too cheerful to accurately convey my feelings ](*,) ) Evidentaly I should be charging you to provide this link to make up for my own lack of luck...  Please don't tell me if those plough plane blades are a set, will you?

Cheers, Alf

P.S. Are they all really, really ignorant in Dorest? Or too rich to care about the value of stuff? Ruddy Cornish are too darn sharp. :(

I don't believe you've found even more for you're collection, will you be able to fit an Xcalibar in the workshop?

Nice haul woodkateer, and the gloating is coming along fine, all down to Philly and his classes.

The bessey's are in my WS.

Plough plane blades are Nos 2,3,4,5,7 & 8 Marples Hibernia all same owner stamp and two No 4's, one A Mathieson the other MacKay Burley & **** of Glasgow, so if you need a No4 just holler!
Thanks for the link, much appreciated.
Regards
Martin

Martin, I'm speechless (well, almost ... )

Let me know when there are more garage sales in your area - it would be worth the flight to Dorset to attend!

Regards from Perth

You be getting a rep as a bit of a lucky git

Philly,
Lucky, yes, without a doubt, but I do haul my not insignificant carcase out of a nice warm bed early on a cold Sunday morning and go looking for it. You never hear about the many, sometimes quite long, trips that produce absolutely zilch.

I do enjoy the thrill of not knowing what will come up. Days like these however hasten the day I will order my Excalibur and spend my ill gotten gains.
Regards
Martin

You're absolutely right, Martin. And that's why you deserve those "special finds"
Philly :D
Who was getting the newspapers at 7:30-should of been at the booty

****, the chisels are worth your tenner!

Coupla ID questions on the plane:

* is the blade tapered of parallel in thickness over its length?

* is the brand of the blade readable?

* is there any name on the lever cap?

Blade is tapered over its length, thinner at top thicker towards cutting edge.
Blade is by WARD Cast steel as is chipbreaker
Lever cap just says NORRIS LONDON 8) 8)

A non adjuster No4 Dovetail rosewood coffin smoother is my thought?

OK. You've got a "switched" blade. It should be Parallel or "gauged". I think Norris used I Sorby blades. Some were brand as Sorby, Some were branded as Norris on one side, and Sorby the other, and some were branded simply "Norris".

So a tapered Ward is definitely a "swap".

Looking at the photo, it certainly appears to have a "line" at the sole which may indicate dovetailing; bear in mind that Norris also made cast infillls.

It's a Norris #4 dovetailed smoother, pre-1915 or so when the lever cap changed shape and the screw clamp became a lot less florid. The cast ones were generally a different more boxy shape much akin to the Marples smoothers, etc. The material will possibly stamped on steel the front of the plane sole and would state "annealed" for annealed cast iron. These planes generally had a parallel iron when new, so the iron might be a replacement. Don't worry about the blade as Norris didn't seem to stamp their name on them before WWI, but the Norris cap iron would be stamped "NORRIS - LONDON" in very small letters abouut 10 or 12mm across on two curved lines (upper arched upwards, lower arching downwards) and there is not brass nut soldered onto it. #4s are frequently found with the names of tool dealers overstamped onver the "Norris" name on the bronze lever cap.

Thought that "Trojan" was another general brand name like "Toga". So possibly a tool dealer mark.

You got a bargain there!

Nice result last night, Martin - you must be well on your way to the Xcaliber now! :D

Cheers,

Certainly helped the fund along, :) The only problem is that in order to accommodate the Excalibur I am having to build a largish 'shed' in my field to put all the c**p I have to move out of the WS in, so I can get the saw in and still be able to move. Even the cheapest way is about a grand! So I'll have to keep getting upon Sunday mornings...
