Non sticky velcro...!

Hi there,

I'm having problems with velcro backed sanding pads not sticking to my random orbit sander. They stay put for a while but start to wander after a few minutes and then fly off altogether. I've tried different discs and get the same result so have decided it is a problem with the surface on the ROS.

I gave it a good clean but this made no difference.

Have others experienced this kind of problem? Is there a solution that doesn't involve replacing an otherwise perfectly good tool?

You will need to replace the disc on the ROS Brian.
They do wear after a time especially if you don't use a dust extract.

Not only that but there appears top be two types of velcro for these disks? I have the Metabo orbital and it won't take Mirka disks like we use at work for some strange reason. Its own disks hold tight but the ones I normally use spin off after a few seconds? I have had to replace the backing pad for one that will take my disks now. :x

Brian, looks like Dom is right.
I also suspect the the pad on your machine, i had one go on me like that and had me puzzled for some time as the velcro on the pad doesnt appear to wear away, just loses its "stickiness"...
you should be able to get a replacement pad/face for your ROS at a small fee, saving you buying a whole new machine (but dont tell that fact to SWMBO :lol: as you never know whats also going to catch your eye shopping).

Mailee, dont think its different Velcro( but someone is bound to prove otherwise :shock: ) I think its the way Manufacturers orientate the hook and eye of the velcro itself.

Yes you could be correct there Niel. I found that the pads I get from work didn't hold onto the backing pad on a brand new ROS although the ones that came with the machine held perfectly. I had to aquire a new backing pad from work so I could use them. Still it is useable now.

There are indeed a couple of different types of hook and loop used as velcro. In power tools it is more common to use Kletogrip which has less loop material than velcro but the hooks are shaped like mushrooms rather than hooks. This gives a less spongy base and good lateral hold to the discs. It does wear and new discs are required from time to time. Some manufactures use a slightly different version of this product and the sanding disc from some manufactures wont grip as well. Its a case of shopping around to find the right sanding disc that holds best.

Thanks for your replies guys,

I actually bought the ROS from Screwfix and I have always bought the discs from them as well partly because I can't find the exact size locally. I've never had any problems in the past so I will contact Screwfix to see if they can get me a new pad.

Just a thought, it's a Skil make, maybe I can contact the manufacturer.

Done - just sent them an email, we'll see what happens

When I contacted Skill I recieved an email from Bosch and they gave me the correct part No. to order. Ordered it yesterday from Raipowertools.com and it arrived today - New ROS for £16.
