Swimbo has decided on beech as the wood for our new kitchen. What she doesn't like is the "orange" colour which happens if its varnished. Is there any finish suitable for a kitchen (durable) which doesn't stain the beech?

Tom's got it.......
...........Rustins Plastic Coating, a 2 part AC lacquer would be my suggestion. It doesn't send it yellow, and produces a bomb-proof finish>

You have to get your design reasonably interesting with beech, because the wood doesn't really help you out...........it's a bit dull!

Does she mean the pink colour that steamed beech has? In which case be sure to buy unsteamed stock.

No, she likes both the steamed and unsteamed, just not the "orange" of varnish.
Thanks for these finishes, how can I show her the final colour without buying a can of each?

dulux trade diamond glaze
fiddes hard wax oil
osmo polyx oil
Rustins Plastic Coating, a 2 part AC lacquer

Mike, she wants a non painted finish that's light, so I thought beech or maple

I would honestly discount the oil based finishes, IME this is what give wood it's ambience

Shultzy,

How about ash? There's a lot more interest in the grain, and it's quite cheap too. Lovely wood!...........Same issues with finishing, though.

hmm you cant really- i have experience of the osmo and the diamond glaze both are fantastic products and neither give the orange effect- the osmo is the most natural looking finish out of the two- the fiddes is getting good reviews from what i hear.
