I've had the WS300 for a week now and its been brilliant. My plane can take off a shaving so thin you can see through it, and the finished beech felt as if it had been sanded with 1000grit. But I'm not happy with the noise the sharpener is making. It sounds as if its coming from the gearbox section and is making a dull clicking noise which seems slower than the disc is turning. Has anyone had the same problem?

I've had one since before they reduced any prices, and there ain't any funny noises. I think I'd be 'phoning - if only to flag up that there may be a problem. It may be nothing, but if it's logged in, from now.

Mine is also making a clicking noise, however doesn't seem to be making any difference.

I've had mine a week or so, and so far seems very good. Shame the wheel can't spin in both directions, then one could do knives on the top, as it is doing one side has the handle in the way. yes i know there is a belt jig for knives, however i am happy to do them on the wheel - if it were possible...

One query for anyone using the vision wheel. you get 2 glass wheels, so 4 grits without changing anything, however it looks like you can only use one side of the vision wheel.

so with the 3 supplied grits for this, have to peel of and reattach each time? this would seem to be a pain, and also you will get dirt sticking to the removed discs so won't be flat when re-attached.

of course i can purchase extra wheels, however this seems almost necessary to be able to use them, and from what i have read, the kit comes with everything you need, and the vision wheel is a "key part of this innovative product"

am i missing something?

You're quite right; you can only fit one abrasive disc to the slotted, vision wheel. As for storing the used ones, I'm sad enough to hold on to the backing paper that is removed from the discs you are using... That's what I use to keep them clean. I'd assume that they viewed the vision wheel as something that wouldn't get used as often as the glass discs by most woodworkers... Turners and perhaps also carvers might prefer to look at another system for more accurate, repeatable results on gouges and the like, such as the Sorby ProEdge.

Also, I didn't realise that the belt sharpening system for knives was available over here already - thanks! :)

Never noticed any irregular ticking noises on my machine and I've had it for over a year now. There is something when the abrasive disc you've fitted needs trimming slightly and it catches against the machine as the glass disc rotates - but, this runs in time with the main disc.

No noise here either, just razor edges and a happy punter. It really is a great piece of kit.

i agree it's great, and i think it was partially aimed at amateur sharpening turners, as the slotted wheel really does allow you to see what you are doing, however as it's one of the key selling points, shame i have to buy 3 more wheels to use it really well.. unless i sharpen all at once every month or so, however this is "get sharp, get back to work!" kit

Just to keep you all up to date I received this from Rulands. I didn't resolve the noise issue so I sent it back for them to test. They said it was ok so I've had it back and will continue to monitor the noise.

I have just received from Work Sharp the following information and attached photo regarding your issue with the WS3000 machine.
Sounds as though the timing belt is a bit loose and chattering on the timing gear pulleys.

The fix:

· With wheel removed, loosen the 4 motor mount fasteners found on top of the unit.

· Place the unit on it’s side so the sharpening port is facing up and to the right.

· This will allow gravity to retention the timing belt.

· While still on it's side, tighten the four motor housing fasteners.

· See attached picture for detail.

I hope this solves the problem. If this is not the solution please contact us and we will speak to Work Sharp again.

Kind regards, Ryan Thorpe
