noise levels on thicknessers

Hey all

Thinking about noise levels from thicknessers, there any that run noticeably quieter than others?

Do induction motors make much difference in these? or is it the cutting action that really creates the noise?

Does the DW733 have such a motor does anyone know?

I have a Delta thicknesser with an induction motor - it makes a significant difference. I used to have the Dewalt 733, and that (while an excellent machine) is one noisy SOAB :lol:

oooooooooh look at those infeed and out feed tables! Looks like a great machine.

I think all of the bench top models I'm looking are going to be pretty darn noisy.

The Makita is supposedly quieter than the rest of the noisy ones. I've never heard the rest so I don't know. At 83db it's still very noisy:

I see in the general woodworking somebody is selling a makita thicknesser :wink:

Going back to your question

I have an DW1150 with an induction motor, so switching it on will just give a humming noise 8)

But the moment you start running wood through it, it will start making a very high pitch noise :evil:

and that will all planners/thicknessers do

I'm gonna have to consider a purchase carefully as I get on well with my neighbours....at the moment :wink:

we've got a DW733 at work and its the noisest tool in the shop by a huge way (the morticer is probably next) - its so noisy that when we move workshops to co locate with our offices we are making a rule that its only to be used at weekends.

its not the motor that makes the noise but the knifes in contact with the timber - taking light cuts helps the noise level.
