Well, Ive started scrolling with my Hegner and went straight into some Xmas tree patterns with some internal work. I`m using some elm which i felled around 3 years ago and have stored since then. I have cut it into squares 120 x 120 x 15 and am using some Flying Dutchman blades.
Initially I think my blade tension was a bit slack as I was concerned about snapping blades but I have got a bit braver and now I think I have it sorted. After watching some of the experts on You Tube, I am in awe with how fast they can turn the wood and keep a nice smooth corner with seemingly no effort. I am cutting into a corner, backing out to make a large radius and then going in from the other side to make the corner nice and square. I am hoping with more practice I can master this control. Another problem I have is that the wood `chatters` sometimes and I have to hold it down with quite a lot of pressure. I have now slowed my cutting right down and am taking it far slower which seems to help. I dont have an arm fitted to hold the work down and would like to know peoples opinions on these. I have a variable speed saw and would welcome any advice on blade speed. I have tried through a range of 400 upto 1200. Around 1000 seems about right but am not really sure.
I have produced two items now and having really good fun...oh and I have only broken one blade so far :)

Hi KKartz1 I do not remember welcoming you to the site,if I did you have got a second welcome. Now we have got that over,I do not use a hold down arm,I tried in the beginning but it got in my way so I stopped using it.I have the Hegner Multicut 1 single speed so I do not have the luxury of begin able to choose the speed.I am pleased that you have made a start to using the scrollsaw, and with practice get into the swing of things. It will be interesting to see how you progress with this great hobby.

Hi and welcome. Like Bryan, I don't have the luxury of variable speed, so it's 1420 or nothing. I still wish I could slow it down occasionally, but as time passes, I feel the need less and less. Just keep it at whatever speed you are comfortable with, and I suspect that in time you will keep increasing the speed. Regarding the hold down foot, I don't think anyone keeps that more than a day or two. I tend to cut mostly 3mm to 8mm so I still get it bouncing when I get above 10 or 12mm thick, but I am sure I will get used to it with practice. At least I have stopped jumping out of my skin every time it slaps on the table or a blade breaks. :)
Keep practising, and most of all, have fun with it.

Martin.

Glad to hear you are enjoying. Those guys you see on you tube have been doing it for quite a while now. Its not going to happen over night, it takes lots and lots of practice but you are doing everything right, you realised there was a problem and you corrected it. You should not need a lot of pressure to hold the wood down. There are several reasons why wood will chatter or jump up and down. In tight turns the wood will jump as the blade is trying to keep pace, its still cutting wood as you turn and the blade twist so it will cause the wood to jump, just take it a bit slower on the tight bits. If the wood is a bit uneven or a bit warped this will cause the wood to jump so hold the wood as near to the blade as possible and this will help. If you are cutting thin ply then reduce the speed to what you are comfortable with. I cut 18mm hardwood and run my saw at 1750 but there are times when i wish it would cut at 1900. Keep at it and keep practicing.

Hello and welcome , you will get all the help and advice from the people on here ,just ask your question and somebody will give you an answer.

ME ,I just wait for somebody to post a picture of their work totally for my enjoyment .

Take care ,and start posting .

I think all the advice you required has been well answered in the above posts, so there is little to add, other than I don’t use a hold down arm, have never owned one, you will soon be able to control the table/wood slap. Regarding speed, I have a variable speed Hegner, but 99% of the time it is run at full speed.

One important thing, don’t be fooled by the speed of cutting and turning on the scroll sawing u-tube videos, as lot are speeded up approx (x3).

There was a scroll saw world record attempt for cutting the biggest jigsaw a couple of months back, I don’t know if it made the national news, as I saw it on our local news.
On the news report the sawing was speeded up (x2 if not x3). A number of people including my sister who knows that I scroll saw, made the comment about the speed of cutting that is possible, I had to put them right on how misleading the news report video was.

Take care, and happy scrolling.

Chris R.

All the above reasons that have been mentioned can cause you work to chatter especially if you work piece is not dead flat, but don't worry this is quite common

Are you using reverse tooth blades ? as this is a good reason as to why the work piece can chatter as the teeth underneath the work piece are facing upwards to reduce breakthrough so naturally the work piece has a tendency to lift as the teeth thrust upwards and if you are not holding the work piece firmly can catch you unawares the coarser the blade the more tendency to lift.

I don't use a hold down clamp for the reasons already mentioned.

Good morning

I have tight night. I work till 3 o` clock. I made a dinosaurs for my children and i am starting to be addicted from scroll saw

Anyway:
1.
For now I am practice on plywood since it is cheap 13 eur 150 x 150 cm thickness 1,2 cm
There plywood made from poplar wood but a little expensive is plywood made from beech wood or cherry wood.
Is there anyone who cuts from plywood an can help me is it good to change different plywood. If i want to buy it cheap i have to buy 1 plate 250 x 150 cm which is a lot of wood but i do not want it to trow it away and it cost cca 25 eur
(sorry i do not know how many pound it is)
I know a lot of you work with regular wood but is there any chance of product made from plywood ? Or just for puzzles?

2. Now i am cutting puzzles and i find that for outlines no. 5 is perfect for cutting inside of puzzles now I am using no. 1 receive it with Hegner machine. Do you think i shout go on smaller blades for puzzle cut? Which blades do you use for plywood and which for hardwood? I love when the space between puzzles is small. Now i know i have to wear mask to scroll

3. In my land there is only Proxxon blades with 3 different blade assortment no. 5 , no. 5 super cut and spiral blades
Prices for them here is doubled or triple than in Germany proxxon super cut no 5 is 6 eur - 6 blades. Now i receive price for PEBECO and NIQUA blades half of prics 12 pcs 3 eur and shipping to me is 10 eur.
I general they are fine blades but so PEBECO have small assortment and it is a little expensive than Niqua but Niqua have big assortment and I really do not know which to buy. For now I am cutting Plywood but I am thinking to go on hard wood thickness 1,2 cm or more (depend of my skills and learning).
This is my last cost of which I can afford in this month.

Thank you for all

welcome to the forum, lucky you, isn't elm nice :)
You don't mention what size of blade you are using? for internal cuts on 15mm elm you should be able to use blades as fine as #2 or #2/0. These blades would allow you to make the tight turns more easily, though you may need to tape the pattern with the finest blade, I don't always find it necessary for elm, a must for oak!
Using fine blades helps me to be more accurate (although everyone is different), as they don't cut as aggressively and I can control the cut better and you can leave your saw at full speed. My favourites at the moment are reverse tooth blades as they give a nice clean edge, although they are little slower than some others.
With regards to the chattering, it may be trying to turn tight with a coarser blade as the teeth 'catch' in the turn, or maybe your piece of wood is not completely level, you will find it happens less often, or you don't notice it as much, as you get more practice - though watch out for sharp edges when it does chatter badly, as you can get a nasty nip
Enjoy your scrolling, and be sure to post some pics

Gill, did you notice this post is from 2013? not even sure if they are still on the forum.
Cheers
