I'm going to save this thread for when I finally have some land of my own to build on.

They're not kidding about the rats. The ***** that rented in my house before me (coincidentally someone I went to school with) whacked a cheap garden centre bought shed up at the bottom of the garden and practically invited the residents of next door's overgrown jungle to live under it. They chewed through the dust collector on my bandsaw forcing me to move all my tools in to the dining room. Cue arguments with the girlfriend and a small fortune spent on poison.

was wondering how you guys secure your workshops. I've two good padlocks fitted but was pondering fitting an intruder alarm due to having a low level window. Was thinking about a cheap battery powered PIR with a wireless receiver in the house, maybe positioned in the bedroom. Apparantly the receiver beeps like an alarm clock if its set off. Don't want a full blown intruder alarm system.

any ideas.. we have dogs that are fairly alert if anyone comes about

I have an alarm and cctv.
To be honest the alarm was pretty cheap. I bought it from these guys, I've actually had a few bits from them and always found them to be very good.

I'm not going into details here, but for what I've paid I think it's a lot better than some of the "shed alarms" available. It works, it's loud as hell and it's designed for job. It's a proper alarm system, that I could expand even further.

The cctv is just an added bonus. It was free and it took me just a few hours to install. I can see what's going on from the lounge and it records but in a basic manner.
The sad truth is, if they want to get in they will. Just make it as difficult as possible.

Yes. You need to make it -
1/ As secure as possible.
2/ Less attractive than next door.

I got one of these wireless intruder alarms. I'm more than happy with the sound it gives out when the sensor is tripped, Have placed the reciever in the kitchen window and on its loudest setting it is really loud.. loud enough to waken me up

That's a very cool and contemporary looking workshop you've made for yourself, and considering that you brought it in under an already low budget I guess you're nothing short of a miracle worker!

some pics of the inside.. not tidy and work in progress as time permits

the uprights serve as nice recesses to put stuff, hose stores away nicely.

The cupboard was £10

Had two spotlights and made up a track for them

This is 4" wide timber I got for free, just run a planer across them and bevelled the edges, power points put in.

Bikes hung up out of the way

Shelves put into the depth of the uprights to hold small items, screws, boxes etc
